On a gloomy Friday at 6 in the morning, I started off my journey from Aizawl to Kolasib. Kolasib is 3 hours away by road from Aizawl, the capital of the state of Mizoram. With the heavy rain and landslides it took us 4 hours to get there as the main road was blocked. I got off at the Kolasib market called Diakkawn at 10.30 a.m and was greeted by Cathy, our partner from WSDS. Wasting no time, we immediately headed to meet our borrowers. We took a taxi to Rothuami's house which was located near the main road. Rothuami is a 57-year-old widow with five children. Her husband and one of her son's passed away a few years ago due to alcoholism. Rothuami gets a pension and along with her children, their monthly income is about Rs. 30,000. All her children are working except for one son who helps her look after their petty shop. She and the other four members of her group called Ruthi group, had taken an enterprise loan from Milaap of Rs. 75,000. The other members of the group are Rosey, Malsawmdawngliani, Lalrammawii, and Vanlalsawmi, who have taken the loan to help them start off or expand their petty shop or poultry or tailoring business With the Milaap loan, Rothuami purchased Amway products to sell in her neighborhood. Even though the profit is not much, she thoroughly enjoys it and would love to expand her Amway business in the future. She says, "By God's grace our group has not had any problems in loan repayment and they have been able to repay it entirely on their own."
