On the day we visited Sanahal, there was heavy rainfall and the weather became comfortable. Somendra, the field officer had already informed her earlier about the visit and hence she had been waiting for us in the courtyard. Sanahal had taken the loan in order to expand her business by procuring yarn on her own, thus avoiding borrowing from local money lender at an exorbitant rate of interest. On the machine, I could see a beautiful phanek that was about to be completed. She said, "It is my elder daughter's as I am giving her training in this craft." In a month, she makes about 50 plain phaneks, all of which is sold to the shopkeepers in the market. Her business is running well and income has gone up by about Rs 6000 per month after taking the loan. This, she says has been a huge help for providing support to her 4 children, 2 daughters and 2 sons all of whom are currently in college. Sanahal says that she has been doing this for more than 30 years and hopes that her daughter will also become adept at weaving soon. Then she would retire from this work. She is thankful to the lenders of Milaap.
