He Fought Stage 4 Cancer Bravely, Now A Dangerous Infection Threatens To Take His Life

If you had been to Tata Cancer Hospital, Kolkata, some months ago, it wouldn't have been surprising to hear a 16-year old boy playing the keyboard to uplift the spirit of every kid in his ward. What will amaze you even more is that this boy, Yash Vardhan Singh, was doing all this, while battling Stage 4 cancer himself.

Even after beating cancer, he is still critical

Yash's mother, Manju, recollects how their life crumbled in 2019 after he was diagnosed with Refractory Hodgkin's Lymphoma. The swelling in his armpits, neck and glands were worrisome. Within a few days, Yash, an extremely active boy, lost 10 kgs and was bedridden. Despite multiple tests, they were still unable to detect his cancer but when they did, it had already reached Stage 4.

For a year and a half post the diagnosis, Yash underwent every possible treatment to save his life - be it chemotherapy, immunotherapy and even a Haplo Transplant. To date, the family has spent around INR 45 lakhs for his treatment but still, his troubles don't seem to end anytime soon. Just when Yash was recovering from his transplant, he developed a severe skin infection called Graft-versus-Host-Disease (GvHD).  In GvHD, the donated cells view the recipient’s body as foreign, and the donated cells/bone marrow attack the body.

"My son's spirit has been indomitable throughout his cancer journey. Even when I broke down, he was the one assuring me that he would win this gruesome battle. After the transplant, I was ecstatic and thanked God for saving him. But my worst fears returned when this horrific infection left him fighting for his life, yet again. I keep praying and begging God to give me Yash's share of pain because I can no longer see him helplessly writhing in agony right in front of my eyes."- Manju, mother

She has spent INR 45 lakhs but it was still not enough to save her son

Manju has been a single mother for 15 years now. She has had a fair share of struggles in raising two young kids all by herself. Even after putting every inch of her soul into gathering the INR 45 lakhs to save Yash, it still isn't enough as he needs further hospitalization for supportive care. They are short of INR 25 lakhs now.

"Whenever he urinates, there is so much blood everywhere that now his blood counts are critically low. I try talking to him, but he doesn't respond. Even though he is sedated, he still suffers in pain. His sister, who is only 12, readily agreed to be his donor even after knowing she will have to be pricked with needles. Before her surgery she told me - 'Mumma, I can handle this pain but please get bhaiya back home soon'. These words...they still haunt me...how do I tell her the truth now?"- Manju

Yash's immune system is currently attacking his skin cells. To prevent it from spreading to other organs, he needs intensive care. His medicines and hospital stay will require about INR 25 lakhs more. He has bravely fought cancer, but now his family is struggling to provide for the rest of his treatment. They were even compelled to sell Yash's beloved keyboard, the one thing that helped him cope during this tough time.

Yash has his whole life ahead of him and he needs your help now to recover. Through your generous contribution, he can be free of this disease and Manju can have her son back. Click here to donate.
