"I dreamt of holding a baby ever since I was pregnant but never in my wildest dreams thought it would be only once in a day. I wait eagerly for that moment when the nurse allows me to carry the babies. Tears of relief role down my cheeks when I know that they are feeling safe in my warmth. But the very next second the terrifying fear of losing them clouds my mind and I weep in distress. Their finger sized limbs, palm-sized body, and thin skin make them seem so fragile. My heart breaks to see how machines and medications are taking over what I should have been doing for them. My only thought when I leave the intensive care each time is I have failed them and I cannot bear to lose them." - Ramalakshmi, mother of twins.
The couple who waited 8 long years for children are on the brink of losing their newbornsSatyanarayana and Ramalakshmi always wished to have children. They had planned to have a child after three years of their marriage only to make sure they had enough money to take care of the child. But sadly, they struggled and visited many hospitals for 5 years for Ramalakshmi to conceive. They have exhausted all their money but they were happy when Ramalakshmi was finally carrying. Despite poverty, the couple did not compromise on anything during pregnancy. Satyanarayana worked hard to save every penny for his wife's delivery. But unfortunately, the babies were born prematurely.
"We were so happy when the doctor's told that it was twins. My husband and I thought it was a gift from God. One day, at midnight I felt water trickle on my body. I thought I was barely six months along and I could not possibly be in labour. But in the morning my mother-in-law confirmed that my water broke. I was immediately rushed to the nearest hospital and we were told that only one baby can be saved. I cried and begged every person who came along to save both my babies. My worried husband immediately shifted me to Hyderabad without caring for the expenses. When I delivered, I did not even get to hold them. They were quickly taken away into emergency care." - Ramalakshmi.
These twins who weigh only 790 gms and 950 gms cannot breathe without respiratory supportRamalakshmi gave birth to a baby girl and a baby boy when they were 27-week-old. These extremely premature babies weighed only 790 grams and 950 grams respectively. The baby girl is facing difficulty in breathing and needs high-flow nasal cannula (HFNC), a device for respiratory support. The baby boy cannot breathe on its own and needs ventilator support. The twins also need artificial nutrition. Their underweight and shortness of breath make these babies condition more vulnerable. They are in dire need of NICU stay for 6 weeks without which they may not survive.
"I haven't breastfed them till now. My heart breaks whenever I see them being fed milk through tubes. But it is their only means of survival. I am relentlessly waiting for the day when they gain weight and breathe without the support of the machine. All I want is to take them home alive." - Ramalakshmi.

"We have borrowed a huge sum of money from my relatives and friends. we have spent 10 lakhs till now. The treatment costs 14 lakhs and it is above means. We have done everything that we could do to save them but our pockets are completely empty now.
