Blood Transfusions Are Just Not Enough To Save My 8-year-old Daughter's Life From A Deadly Blood Disorder

What is it like to watch your child grow up all the while knowing she has an increased risk of cancer or tumor and she needs a life-saving treatment? I say that it is more painful than death. I have been seeing my 8-year-old daughter Thanushree fighting to live with all her strength.  At first, I did not understand the severity of the condition. When doctors explained the cruelty of it, I almost became numb. Her body has stopped producing enough blood cells and the worst is not too far. Without treatment, it is fatal.

Thanushree has been fighting a severe blood disorder for the past one year

One year ago, active and cheerful Thanushree suddenly became very pale and fell sick. I took her to the doctor but the medications did not help. She became very weak and the fever persisted. When she turned completely yellow, I was frightened and took her to a bigger hospital. She was diagnosed with Fanconi Anemia. I had never heard of it before. I did not understand the magnitude of it. As you can imagine, learning that my daughter was likely to die young was terrifying.

Since then, Thanushree goes through the painful blood transfusions every month. She takes medications thrice a day. After every transfusion, Thanushree becomes very active. She sketches a lot and give her art away to the doctors and nurses she knows in hospital. Unfortunately, this lasts only for 20-25 days. After that she is completely opposite to what she was. She cannot eat or drink anything. She doesn't talk or play. She sleeps all day.

This condition is so overwhelming. I feel so powerless but through the entire treatment, my daughter never loses her courage. She progressed through the entire process with barely a hitch. She is really an angel, she has never troubled us. She surprises me every time with her capacity to understand the reality. I don't know what she has perceived of her disease, but she knows that this treatment is inevitable and she needs to go through it if she has to play and go to school like her friends.

Thanushree has not gone to school since the diagnosis. We are running back and forth to the hospital. She is my only child. She is my world and there is nothing beyond her. I just can't leave everything in the hands of fate. I vowed to change it. I'm doing everything that is within my power to save her.

To look at her on outside, no one wouldn't have known she is so sick. But some days, even getting out of the bed and walking around for a bit is progress. It is very important to rebuild her strength through activities. Blood transfusions are not enough for her to survive, she needs a bone-marrow transplant to ever recover. Without the transplant, she will develop cancer, organ failure and eventually die very young.

Thanushree needs a bone marrow transplant to survive

Do I live only to see this dreadful disease slowly eat away my daughter? How can I bear to lose her? She has fought so bravely all these days. I'm sure she will continue to fight but I need to give her a chance! Bone-marrow transplant is the only solution but I cannot afford it and I can't imagine the cost. Not knowing how helpless I am, my daughter is hopeful that she will be back home soon and play with her friends.

Thanushree parents are struggling to save her

How can you help

I work in a garment factory and my husband works as an office assistant in a company. We earn Rs 7,000 every month. We spend Rs 8,000 a month for the blood transfusion and with the remaining money we pay our rent, buy medicines and meet our basic needs. I will lose my pay even I take one day off. I work day and night. My husband gets permission from his office and he takes her to the hospital for the blood transfusions. We are struggling to cope with her treatment and our jobs. Treatment requires Rs 35 lakhs which is unimaginable for us. Your support can help us to save our only child. She deserves a life.

Your contribution can give her a chance to live her life!
