Shanaz suffered from an unknown disease for almost one and a half year and all this time, they took her to several hospitals in and around Jammu. It was finally in Chandigarh that she was diagnosed with Hypogammaglobulinemia, an immunodeficiency. This results in a lower antibody count, which impairs the immune system, increasing the risk of infection. These infections can damage organs and lead to potentially serious complications.
She doesn't have the energy to even laugh or smile
“No medicine was working on her and every day her condition was getting worse. She would get infections so easily and would be admitted in the hospital very frequently. I tried to cheer her up but she use to feel so tired that she couldn't even smile or laugh.” - Ashraf
Now, only an injection can save her
“What I earn is not even enough to take her to the hospital, let alone her treatment. I am just a poor labourer and affording a treatment that costs me at least Rs 50 thousand a month is beyond my means. These two years that I managed was also because of my family and friends who helped me. I even sold my land to save my daughter but it is just not enough. I am helpless now.” - Ashraf
Studying in the same grade since 2 yearsAfter Shanaz’s condition got critical she couldn’t continue her school. It’s been 2 years and she is still in 6th grade. The little girl is losing her hope to study with her friends as the gap between their grades keep on increasing.
“They are all in senior classes now, I feel very lonely and also I am afraid to go back to school. What if they tease me for not being promoted to the higher class? But I tried...I really did try. I just couldn’t get the strength. I just want to study.” - Shanaz
