This 1-Month-Old Baby Was Only 700 grams When He Was Born And Is Fighting For His Life In The ICU

Uma Devi’s baby boy was born gasping for breath. Minutes after his birth, he was rushed to the NICU due to severe respiratory distress syndrome which made it impossible for him to breathe on his own. Uma’s baby was only 700 grams when he was born and has an underdeveloped heart and lungs. He is only one month old and fighting hard to stay alive. Their baby will only survive if he's in the ICU for the next two months, but Uma and Vijay are finding it extremely difficult to continue his treatment.

Uma’s baby was taken away from her even before she could hold him

Uma and Vijay were friends for 7 years before they got married two years ago. When they learned of Uma’s pregnancy last year, they were overjoyed. With the dawn of a new year, they were looking forward to welcoming their baby into this world. Uma and Vijay’s dream of a happy family was brutally altered by fate. Uma was rushed to the hospital on 31 Dec as her blood pressure had risen. Suddenly, she started seizing and had to have an emergency c-section surgery to deliver the baby.

It was only the seventh month of my pregnancy, I was worried about my baby’s life even before he was born. I saw him for only a few minutes before he was taken away from me. Now when I see him on the ventilator in the ICU, all I see are tubes and needles. My baby is lost amongst all the tubes. I’m waiting for the day I can hold him again and tell him that we're there for him.”

Uma’s baby boy can’t breathe on his own yet. His heart and lungs are underdeveloped, and he needs two more months of observation and medical attention in the ICU to have a chance. Along with the fear of losing their only baby, the fear of stopping his treatment also grips them every day.

Uma and Vijay need urgent help to save their son

Uma’s baby has been in the ICU for one month. The only life he has known has been in the lonesome of the ICU. Uma and Vijay visit him every day, and even though they can’t hold him, they watch over him like every protective parent.

“I know that the only thing keeping him alive is the care he’s getting in the hospital. I want to protect him from all this pain, but the only thing that’s in our hands now is to ensure that his treatment is continued. We’re determined to do everything to save him and even took a loan of 2 lakhs, but it's not enough.”

Vijay recently lost his job as a store manager in Bangalore since he took a 15 day leave to take care of Uma and the baby in the hospital. Uma was in the hospital for 3 days after the delivery and is still recuperating. Vijay is the sole breadwinner of the family and is now desperately giving job interviews. Their baby needs 15 lakhs to continue getting treated.
