Laxmi’s Baby Almost Died In Her Womb, Now She Is Fighting For Her Life In The NICU

When I placed my hand on my stomach, I felt nothing. No movement, no kicking. I thought my baby was dead. I could only imagine the worst. At that moment, I thought all my dreams of ever becoming a mother were shattered.” – Laxmi, mother of the 1-month-old baby girl

Laxmi and Raju’s daughter’s life was in danger even before she was born. She made it out alive, but her condition is still critical.  She is much smaller than other babies her age, her own parents can’t hold her and she can only be fed with tubes. The incubator in the NICU is keeping her safe – she is not ready for the world outside the hospital yet.

They put everything on the line for their one chance at becoming parents

When Laxmi and Raju were not able to conceive even over 2 years after their marriage, they had almost given up hope when a relative told them about IVF. They knew this was their one chance at becoming parents and completing their family – their only dream.

“We spent all our savings, exhausted all our resources and did everything to make sure I could get the treatment. We weren’t prepared for what would follow. For 7 months everything was fine, but then my feet started swelling up. A few days later, I couldn’t feel the baby.”
Things looked bleak for the couple. Laxmi was told that she needs to deliver the baby urgently because her blood pressure was rising, and her baby was struggling to breathe.

Unfortunately, their baby was in a critical condition at birth

On April 13, Laxmi and Raju were blessed with a baby girl. Unfortunately, she was born in the seventh month of her pregnancy, she was underweight, struggled to breathe and had a blood infection. To add to her misery, she was taken away from her mother as soon as she was born. Laxmi’s baby girl needs to stay in the NICU for 4 more weeks to survive.

They sold their only source of income to start their baby’s treatment

It’s been one month of sleepless nights for the devastated parents. Raju, a farmer, has sold his only piece of land to start his newborn’s treatment. Now he has nothing left.

“We haven’t gone home in a month. I was already in 9 lakh debt, now I owe 7 lakhs more. I’ve borrowed more than I can ever pay back. For the past two weeks, I’ve been struggling to look for a way to continue our baby’s treatment. I haven’t been able to stay with my wife and baby.” - Raju, father
