One Step at a Time

When 33-year old Alpaben's husband developed liver failure 6 months back, she decided to take things in her hands and started a tailoring project. The tailoring project helped the family in their daily expenses, husband's health and two children's education, aged 10 and 7, in an English-medium school. But that's pretty much all it did, she barely managed to make ends meet every month. So in the hope to start saving some money, she applied for a loan with Milaap to buy a new sewing machine.

With the new sewing machine, Alpaben has now managed to convert her project into a proper business. She is able to take orders like lacework for dupattas, ready-made stitching and salwar kameez adornment, all of which are generally in demand throughout the year. She also manages to additionally put Rs 200-300 aside as savings every month. Alpaben plans on getting another loan in the future so she can buy an inter-locking machine which will help her business further.
