This Milkman's Son Is Fighting A Deadly Disease That Causes His Body To Stop Making Blood

His two cows are Mahadevappa's primary sources of income. His small farm in the village is arid and brings income only when it rains. As if to add to his pain, Mahadevappa's 9-year-old son, Manoj, has a terrible medical condition, where his body is barely producing blood. The family's quiet, peaceful life is gone forever and they are struggling to save Manoj.

Manoj's condition was not caught till it became worse

Last month, Manoj had a fever and kept complaining that he felt tired. The local doctor gave him some medicines for the fever – but Manoj still felt tired. Mahadevappa decided to take Manoj to Mysore, the nearest city for better treatment.

At Mysore, Mahadevappa was told that Manoj's blood-cell count was dangerously low. He received an immediate blood transfusion. But that was only a temporary solution. The family was asked to come to Bangalore for further tests and treatment.

In Bangalore, Manoj was diagnosed with Aplastic Anemia – a condition where the bone marrow does not produce enough blood. He needs a bone-marrow transplant that will restart the production of blood in his own body. Till he gets this surgery, Manoj will not recover.

“My sister and her husband are finding it very hard to cope with what happened. Manoj is especially attached to his mother and will not stay any where without her. She cries every day for seeing her child fight a condition this dangerous,” explains Mahesh, Manoj's maternal uncle.

Manoj's carefree childhood has been stolen by disease

“Manoj lived like any normal boy growing up in a village. He played different outdoor games with his friends all day. But he is also interested in studying. That made his parents very proud of him. Whatever he did, Manoj did well. It has really hurt his parents to see him become so weak,” Mahesh says.

Mahadevappa feels that fate has given him a very raw deal. He works very hard to provide for his wife Jyothi and his two sons. Along with selling milk, he works on his farm and works for daily-wages in his village. Despite doing everything right – he has been cursed with the sorrow of watching his child suffer.

He has borrowed from relatives and friends to keep the treatment going till now. But a bone-marrow transplant will cost Rs 24 lakhs – an impossible amount. Even if he sells his small farm and house, he will only be able to arrange a fraction of the total cost.

Manoj before he got sick

“We don't want any money for ourselves. All we want is for Manoj to get better. His disease has robbed his childhood and till he gets treatment, he will need to stay alive by taking blood. I must have done something really bad to see my son suffer this way,” says Mahadevappa.

How you can help

Both Mahadevappa and Jyothi work very hard to give their two children the best life they can. But Manoj's present condition has put an insurmountable difficulty in their way. Nothing they do will bring them the kind of money needed to save Manoj. They are desperately praying for a miracle.

Your contribution can help this milkman save his son in spite of his poverty.
