On way to Rayagada from Muniguda, amidst the Niyamgiri Hill Range, lies a tiny hamlet called Chatikona. Sabita Hial who hails from this village purchased a low smoke cook stove with the help of a loan from Milaap. She is a mother of two children. She, along with her husband, rears chicken and sells them in the local market to make a living. Like it helped many women, the low smoke cook stove did provide a great relief to Sabita from the ordeal she would encounter while using the old cook stove.
On a typical day, Sabita now spends close to 3 hours on cooking, in contrast to over 6 hours previously. She doesn’t have to sit close to the new cook stove and constantly monitor the fire. She is happy that the amount of smoke from the new cook stove is low enough to have a safe cooking environment. Sabita started to realise the benefits of the new cook stove only recently. Till a few weeks ago, her brother-in-law was hospitalised and she had to stay in the hospital to provide him necessary care. “So far, I’ve used this new cook stove only for a brief period starting a few weeks ago”, says Sabita, “I’m contented with the cook stove and I intend to continue using it regularly.”
