This Farmer Couple Might Lose Their Son To a Life Threatening Blood Disorder, Even Before He Turns 5

“He was diagnosed with cancer just 3 months after birth. All that he has known, ever since that day, is bottles of blood and constant fever and cough. For four years now, the 4 and a half year old has lost count of the number of blood transfusions, crying in pain every time a needle is used.” Raju, Jaswath’s father.

At just 13 Kgs, he continues to lose weight and sleep eludes him

He stopped feeding at 3 months. He eats little food and survives on medications and transfusions. The nature of his illness-Beta Thalassemia Major-is such that crippling fatigue creeps in after few minutes of physical activity. Over the past 2 years, he has hardly managed to have a good night’s sleep. Every night severe pain in the legs reduce him to tears.

School has remained a distant dream for Jaswanth

“He hasn’t stepped in to school yet. At an age where pencils and books ought to be his friends, blood and hospital bed have taken their place.  “Every day, he asks me, ‘Ma, when can I go to school? Why is it that all my friends go to school but I have stay indoors? I’ve no answers to such questions. It breaks my heart to not answer. I only hope there comes a day when my son can go to school, “ says Lakshmi Bai, Jaswanth mother.

Fate’s cruelty strikes twice before they recovered from the first blow

As Jaswanth continued to battle the illness and the family was sinking into emotional turmoil and utter financial distress, there was a further cruel misfortune that awaited them. Jaswanth’s 3 month-old sister then, who is now a 2 and a half-year-old was diagnosed with the same disorder. The lives of the parents and the children have now become intertwined with cancer and a battle against it.

BMT can cure Jaswanth’s fatal illness but after lakhs have been spent, debt only continues to grow

“I work every day and earn anywhere between Rs 200 and 300. When my wife worked at the same farm, we would manage to earn enough to keep the family afloat. But, with both our children requiring special care to cope with the fatal illness. The doctors tells us that a bone marrow transplant (BMT) will help my son recover, but we are in a debt of more than 5 lakhs so far and if we don’t find help, we might not be able to afford 28 Lakhs required for the treatment. We might lose him before he turns 5,” says Raju.
