Today's image of the day shows Madhumita Dhumal, who is one of the 800+ Sakhis benefitting from Sakhi Retail's entrepreneurship training program. (Check out yesterday's image of the day for more information on our field partnership with Sakhi Retail.) She is selling the Oorja Cooking Stove, a smokeless biomass stove that is fuelled by burning pellets. Created by students of the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, the low-cost stove answers the various issues of the rural population, such as the hazardous smoke and the high price and inflammability of kerosene fuel.
These stoves were manufactured by the British Petroleum India Energy Ltd, and distributed through rural Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra as a test run. The stove is showing signs of massive impact and growth, having already changed the lives of 25,000 households for the better.
