How Reniben grew her dairy business

The morning was cold and wet. The rain had turned the roads into vast lakes of dull, muddy water. Gandhidham, a town in the Kutch district of Gujarat, seemed bleak and gray that day. Despite the gloomy weather, my lungs were filled with fresh air, and I was quite exhilarated that day to meet the borrowers.

31-year-old Reniben came out of her house made of mud plastered walls, and warmly welcomed us. She was garbed in traditional attire. There was a cowshed with two calves that I saw as soon as I took a step inside the gate. Reniben had taken a loan of Rs. 7000 to buy a cow few months back in order to expand her dairy business.

With her loan from Milaap, she said that she was able to save Rs. 1500 per month, which is more than what she could save as profits from her dairy business earlier. Reniben has been into this business most of her life, and she lives along with her husband who is an auto rickshaw driver. She didn’t have any specific idea or thought about how she wants to expand her business ahead. But for the moment, she was contented with the savings that she was able to make.
