“He was screaming and crying in pain... We rushed him to the hospital in the middle of the night. It was very scary. I almost.. I almost lost him that day and I never want anything like that to ever happen again.” – Archana, mother
8-year-old Tanmay is suffering from thalassemia major, a severe blood disease. The family lives in an interior village of Kohlapur and reaching the nearest hospital that can take care of Tanmay’s condition is 150 km away. He may look fine from the outside but there is always a fear of what might happen to him in the parent’s mind.
His body burns and he feels suffocated
“He wants to go to school and play with his friends but... he often feels suffocated! He always feels as if his body is burning. Just imagine a life like that for 8 long years!" –Sunil, father
They beg and borrow, but can't afford their son's treatment
Archana is a maid and Sunil is a daily wage labourer. Whatever they had – land, house and small jewellery, they sold everything. They live hand to mouth now.“Sometimes we don’t have enough for Tanmay’s monthly transfusions also. We beg and borrow for it but sometimes we are helpless. Without the transfusions, his skin turns pale and his body starts to ache. It's painful for us to watch... imagine how painful it must be for him to bear all of this.” – Sunil
Only a bone marrow transplant can save him
Tanmay’s sister is a perfect match to be the donor and with this transplant, Tanmay can live a healthy life. He can go back to the school that he loves and play with all his friends. Without this treatment, he won’t be able to survive. Blood transfusions can’t help him anymore.“Doctors said this is the right age and stage for him to get a transplant. If not now it will be too late to save him. He has done nothing wrong to deserve this. Please help us!” – Archana
