The Same Rare Disease Is Threatening To Take This Mother's Second Son As Well

“Every day, thinking that your child might die soon is the worst curse a mother can get. If we can’t afford this treatment, if we take him home without the transplant, he might not even make it to his 1st birthday.” - Nausheen, mother

Little Abid is suffering from IL-10 receptor deficiency, a very rare condition that leads to severe inflammation in the digestive tract. It causes painful ulcers, very bloody stool, and rapid weight loss. Only a stem cell transplant can save him.

This is not the first time that I've felt cursed

Nausheen and Akhtar’s first baby died just after a few months of his birth. The cause of death was unknown then, but after Abid’s disease was diagnosed, the parents realized he is going through the same fate as their first child.

“My first baby’s health kept deteriorating and no doctor could tell us why. Now my Abid also… this time we have the cure but still, we can’t save him. I don’t want to lose him too.”

“He used to cry so much. We took him 4-5 times to the doctor in our village but no medicine worked. Then one day he had bloody diarrhea and that was it, we went to a bigger hospital in the city. I was so scared but I never expected that this could be something lethal.”

Every box of milk cost us so much

Abid is prone to infections and hence can’t have his mother’s milk. He is dependent on milk cartons.

“The milk and medicines alone are costing us thousands of rupees every week. I don’t know how will we ever be able to afford the transplant.”

My husband left the village to save him

Akhtar used to work in a computer shop near his village but what he earned was barely enough to take their son to the city hospital which is 170 km away for a checkup.

“He calls me every day to check on our son. It is so hard not to cry in front of him. He was already so nervous when the doctors said that it might cost 5-6 lakhs for the treatment. But now they say he needs a transplant which will cost 22 lakhs. We are scared that we might lose Abid. Please help us.”

Your small contribution can save this little child's life. These parents cannot take their baby home without your help.
