This Mother’s Greatest Fear Will Come True If She Can’t Afford Her Son’s Chemotherapy

“I have cancer!” 7-year-old Alif innocently tells everyone he talks to. Whether it’s his grandmother on the phone or a new friend he makes in the hospital. Alif is too young to understand the implications of this deadly disease – too young to know what death is. So, he tries to stay cheerful. But on some days, he can barely sit. His whole body trembles because of the pain, he vomits all day and he can’t even have a bite of food. The bad days are outnumbering his good ones now.

“It just means he’s getting sicker and sicker. He needs the chemotherapy to get better, but right now we can’t even afford new medicines for him. I don't want to say it out loud...but I know what will happen to him if I can't...” – Shireen, mother

Shireen is now more worried than ever. If they can’t continue his chemotherapy for the next few months, they will lose Alif to blood cancer.

He thought losing his hair would save him from this disease

Alif has always been a sweet, obedient boy. He isn’t naughty, was regular to school and always did his homework on time. That’s what his life is supposed to be about – school, friends, games. The simple joys. However, ever since he was diagnosed with cancer two months ago, everything has been different.

“He has a lot of questions. He asks me if everyone his age has to go through this…he thinks this pain is a part of life! That’s the saddest thing for a mother to see…we had to shave his hair because it was falling. He thought that it would save him from this disease. Immediately after it was done, he asked me if we could go home.” – Shireen

However, Alif has months of gruelling chemotherapy ahead of him. It’s the only thing that can save him – if only Alamin and Shireen can afford it.

His father fears he won’t see him alive the next time..

Alamin hasn’t spent much time with Alif in the past couple of months. The two times he was with him, Alamin watched Alif go from being happy and talkative to crying in pain. Back in their hometown, Alamin can’t help but wonder if he will see his son alive again. The thought keeps him up all night.

“We didn’t waste time in bringing him to Kolkata. We borrowed money, sold our jewellery and managed to get 3 lakhs to start his treatment. Now all of that is over. I work in a private company, I want to be there with them…but I’m the only earning member. I have 5 people depending on me…but nothing I do is enough. I’m scared I won’t see him again..” – Alamin, father

Alif tries to stay brave through all the pain, but without chemotherapy, he’s only going to get worse. His parents are desperately trying to save him. They can’t do it without your help.
