Poor Farmers With No Stable Income Seek To Save Their 4-Year-Old From Deadly Blood Disorder

“I am on my knees begging anyone out there to save my child. I have two more brothers and none of us have a job. We have a small plot of agricultural land and we use that to support the entire family. I have two kids of my own, both young. It is not fair that something this big and serious should befall us. We have wished good for everyone. But my faith that good happens to good people is beginning to fade now." - Dev, father.

Dev and Sangeeta’s son, Kuldeep, has known pain since he was only a year old. Hailing from Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, the parents realised something was not quite right with their child, when one afternoon, while taking a nap in his mother’s lap, he turned completely pale.

An evening that changed everything

“I immediately called my husband and we rushed him to hospital. Multiple tests were done and the doctors asked us to wait for a night to get a conclusive diagnosis. That night, as I recall, was the most difficult for our entire family. None of us could sleep. Our son was still so young and we were scared that something really bad could happen to him. All kinds of negative scenarios were running through our minds. And when the morning came, our lives changed for the worse.” - Sangeeta, mother.

4-year-old Kuldeep was diagnosed with sickle cell disease. The disease causes the healthy red blood cells to die early, leaving a shortage of blood flow and abnormal levels of platelets in the body causing pain. Treatments include medication, blood transfusions and in dire cases, a bone-marrow transplant.

Kuldeep has been undergoing blood transfusion for the past 3 years.
Initially, he would require one transfusion every 2 months, but as he grew older the frequency increased. Now he needs one transfusion every 20 days.

This family is in need of your help

“So far, we have spent Rs.5 lakh on my son’s treatment. We are not well off, and we have exhausted all our savings to the point that we are debt from borrowing money for his treatments. Now, no one is ready to lend us any money anymore. Farming is also not as lucrative as it was before the pandemic and we are forced to live hand to mouth. The doctor says that if we want to save our child and ensure that he lives a normal, carefree life, he has to undergo a bone marrow transplant - which will cost us nearly 30 lakh rupees! How can a family, where everyone is dependent of agricultural produce arrange for that much money?” - Sangeeta

“I want to save my child at any cost. If it would have been possible, I would have gladly borne the brunt of this disease if I could; if it meant that my child wouldn't have to suffer. But we have to face the harsh ways of life. It’s just when something like this happens to your child, your fears intensify and you start to lose hope, no matter how hard you try to put on a brave front for that playful, carefree little human being.” - Dev
