“Our child loves going to school. But now that he got heavier, his father is unable to carry him anymore to any place. But more than that, he is scared to go to school now because his peers make fun of him and call him names. When he was in junior classes, kids never used to say anything. But now in higher classes, he has been targeted by bullies.”- Ramani, Kanish ’s mother.
Kanish was diagnosed with lipoma of the spinal cord with tethering and complex spinal deformity, a condition that causes his spinal cord to be abnormally stretched. In addition, he also has a foot deformity where his feet are curved inwards. With urgent surgery, these problems can be corrected and Kanish can finally know what it is to live a normal life.
His condition is worsening; he has even lost bladder controlKanish’s spinal cord began stretching more as he grew up, increasing sensory and motor problems, especially the loss of bladder control. This is when his family started understanding the urgency of his condition and decided to come to Chennai for treatment from their village in Thiruvannamalai.
“He has started hating himself due to the fact that he wets the bed regularly now. He even starts crying all of a sudden because of this. I cannot watch my son go through this anymore.”-Ramani, tearfully.
Kanish’s father, Mathiyazhagan is a poor farmer who earns money only when the harvest is possible. His income is seasonal and therefore he is able to make only enough to feed his family of four – wife Ramani and 2 sons, Kanish and Ugeswaran. Being poor, this family does not even have friends or family who can loan them the 8 lakh rupees required for Kanish’s surgery.
Dependent only on farming, the family cannot fund his treatment
“Every trip to Chennai from Thiruvannamalai costs Rs 1500, which my husband and I borrow from many people with difficulty. If paying for a trip itself is beyond our means, how will we pay for our son’s surgery?”-RamaniKanish can walk and lead a normal life with your help. Click here to save Kanish.
