"She Tries To Say Many Things, But The Pain She’s Experiencing Doesn't Let Her"

"As a mother, I can't bear to see her in pain. But at the same time, I also understand her suffering. Perhaps she tries to say many things, but the pain she’s experiencing doesn't let her. Her head is so big now, and I imagine the heaviness might be weighing her down. She can only cry because of all the discomfort and sometimes, she tries to call out to me saying, ‘Ma’. But that’s the extent of her communication with us." - Swati

A birth defect has caused her head to swell abnormally

Swati and Sandeep were blessed with their baby girl, over a year ago. The new parents, who were looking forward to being a family of 3, were ecstatic to have their baby with them. But soon enough, their troubles began with their baby’s condition starting to show.

“Our baby was born premature, and about 3 months after her birth, her head started to grow. We had thought that things would become normal gradually, but that didn't happen. It only continued to swell, and now her head is 10 times the normal size. We have approached several doctors, and haven’t been able to find a way out. She suffers a lot of pain as a result of her swollen head and is often unable to sleep at night because of it.” - Swati, mother

The 15-month-old baby was diagnosed with congenital hydrocephalus, a condition where excessive fluid accumulates in the deep cavities of the brain, causing the head to swell up and exerting pressure on her brain.

They have tried every possible way to get her treated

Swati and Sandeep have tried whatever they could in their capacity to have the child get proper treatment and recover. They have gone far and wide, listening to people's instructions and approaching several doctors but could not find any help whatsoever.

"Doctors said that our daughter has a brain infection, which has caused her head to get all swollen. They have said that she will never be able to lead a normal life. Whenever I see other children her age, I feel sad and dejected thinking about my child. Her life has barely begun and she’s having to suffer so much pain. I just want her to recover and lead a normal life like any other child.” - Sandeep

This worried father can barely get through his work days

The child’s father Sandeep Kumar accompanies other people on labour work, for plumbing, electricity works and other similar jobs. Even he can't remain at work completely because of his ailing daughter and he often has to leave everything midway to return home. Work is difficult to come by because it is scarce, and as a helper, he only earns for the work he does.

"We are drowning in debt. As of now, we have not been able to repay any of our debts and we cannot take more loans from people. We don't have the financial capacity to repay all this money. There's hardly anyone left who would give us any money. Also, we have mortgaged almost everything we have. As parents, we have tried everything to get our daughter treated for this problem and now, we are at our limit.” - Swati added.
Besides needing to be treated by a neurosurgeon and undergoing a complex surgery to drain out the fluid build-up and rectify her condition, the little one also needs to undergo plastic surgery and oral and maxillofacial surgery. Additionally, she would require prolonged hospitalisation and the whole treatment would cost approximately Rs 40 lakhs.
