"We are not privileged. What luck does our daughter have if she grows up deaf and dumb? We want to do everything possible to make sure she can hear and speak so she has a fair chance at life."
Bhumika was born with a profound hearing loss. Her parents only noticed the issue when she was 3 years old and tried to get her hearing aid. Unfortunately, machines did not help and the only thing that can is a cochlear implant surgery done at the earliest before a bone grows in the ear making it impossible to remedy the problem.
This story has been written from Bhumika's mother's perspective.
We are from a small village near Magadi where my husband and I are laborers on farmland. We have been married for a few years, and Bhumika was our first born. We got to know that she had a hole in her heart. It shook our world to hear that about our newborn. Since then, our world was about caring for our daughter.
We used to live on whatever we made at the farm. It was not much considering how fickle the monsoons were at the time. We were always worried about her heart health and spent a lot on her medication. She even had an angiogram. With that occupying our mind, the fact that she did not turn around when there was noise or look at us when we were calling out her name seemed too trivial.
In the village, everyone gets a say. You tend to listen to people when they say "It is nothing. She will grow out of it. Don't make a big deal." As a parent also, you do not want to accept that your child has a disability. A heart problem affects the ability to survive, we would be worried, we might even tell the world. A hearing impairment, now that affects the quality of life itself. It took us a while to understand and recognize that she was deaf.
We brought Bhumika to the city where the doctor said a cochlear implant can help change her life. My husband and I moved to the city. Here he is working as a vegetable vendor on the street. At the maximum, he makes Rs. 6000/month. We are renting a house, and have two kids to care for. The CM fund of Rs. 3 lakhs has been a blessing, and they say we may not get PM fund. So now we are lacking funds to give our daughter this gift.
Bhumika is now 5 years old. She has very less time before this option slips away and she has to grow up deaf and dumb. The cost of surgery is estimated at Rs. 10 Lakhs. You are our only hope to help our daughter.
Can you imagine losing your ability to hear or speak? This baby girl would have to grow up without both senses without a surgery that could open up the world to her.
