Eldho was in a church a few kilometers away from the hospital, deep in prayer, when his brother called. With a racing heart and sweaty palms, he answered the phone.
“What’s wrong? Is she okay? What happened?”
But his brother couldn’t tell him over the phone. Eldho rushed back to the hospital, to find his and his wife’s families waiting for him. None of them could speak either. When he went to his wife’s ICU room... he understood.
The machines weren’t beeping. She wasn’t breathing. His wife had died.
Binsy and Eldho, just a few hours after their marriage It hasn’t even been a year since Eldho and Binsy got married. The week of their marriage had been the happiest either of them had ever been in their lives, until a few weeks later when they discovered Binsy was pregnant. It was the stuff of dreams, neither of them could ask for more. But their happy story came to a grinding halt last week, when Binsy started having severe complications in her pregnancy, two months before the due date. Just days later, she passed away. Yesterday was her funeral. Their son remains in critical condition.
“We’re not a rich family by any means. Most of us are daily wagers. Eldho is just an assistant in a small workshop. So am I, in fact. But it never mattered to us, and it definitely didn’t matter to Binsy. She was such a sweet woman. Always had a smile on her lips and kindness in her heart. And she was so funny as well! I still can’t believe that she... that... Why did this have to happen? And their poor baby. They’re saying he needs ICU stay for weeks, costing more than 6 lakhs! He lost his wife, his son is critical – Eldho can’t take it anymore
Eldho hasn’t spoken a word since Binsy passed away. He stopped eating two days before that, and hasn’t slept in as many days, devoting all his time to praying. Just a few hours ago, Eldho himself got hospitalized, his mind and body too drained. At the same time, his premature-born son is struggling to survive too. All his organs are underdeveloped, but his lungs are the weakest. The poor baby is unable to take even a single breath without his tiny body shuddering in pain. He can make it with proper ICU care, but Eldho is in no condition, physically, mentally, or financially, to do anything.
