Without Urgent Treatment, This 6-Year-Old's Liver Will Be 100% Damaged

Every day from the past one week, Anas wakes up to an unfamiliar environment – a row of hospital beds with nurses and doctors visiting each one with medicines and injections, and the bustle of other patients and their relatives brushing past. The smell of disinfectants makes him nauseous. He misses his home and his friends. He begs his mother Naziya to take him home, saying ‘I’ll be a good boy from now on, Ammi. No more being naughty and troubling you. I’ll do whatever you say’. His mother’s eyes fill with tears as she assures him that he can go home fast, but the truth is something else.

“Anas thinks he has a small fever only – I haven’t told him anything else. But in reality, his liver is getting damaged with every passing day. Without medicines, his liver will stop functioning altogether and then we won’t be able to save him. But we can’t afford it and worry that we may have to get him discharged abruptly,”-Naziya, mother.

‘He has not been able to eat anything. He throws up if he tries’

Anas studies in 1st grade. He is a smart boy who knows his ABCs and numbers well. He loves going to school and playing with his 3 elder sisters who pamper him like a baby even now. 2 months ago, Anas started falling sick very often. He would get fevers and slowly his skin started acquiring a yellow tinge. He was diagnosed with jaundice by doctors in his hometown, and was on medication. Last week, his condition worsened when he started throwing up everything he ate and his family rushed him to a good hospital in Delhi where he is being treated now.

“It is in Delhi that we got to know that his liver is badly affected. He needs strong medicines to live now. He is better than before, but cannot eat well. He throws up immediately if he tries to take a small bite of roti. The yellowness has spread to every inch of his body now,”-Naziya

Anas’s father was forced to go back to the village, leaving his mother to struggle alone

Anas’ father Juned, who was there with his son and wife in the hospital all this while, had to leave to their village in Bihar recently. He had exhausted all the funds that he had, and was left with nothing. He had no option but to try and beg his friends and relatives back in the village. Juned is a daily wager who earns Rs 400 a day when work is available. He already spent more than Rs 3 lakhs of borrowed money on his son’s treatment and is left with nothing else. Now, Naziya is the only one with Anas in the hospital and she worries she might have to discharge him before he is completely cured.

“My husband called me today morning itself saying no funds have been arranged yet. I don’t know what to do now. I have no money left for even food with me now. I fear we will have to leave the hospital before my poor baby becomes alright. I will not be able to forgive myself if that happens,”-Naziya

With your kind contribution, this mother will be able to save her son before his liver deteriorates completely and threatens to kill him
