He Would've Lost His Limbs And Life To Rare Disease If It Wasn't For Your Timely Help

Just shy of his 1st birthday in 2019, little Vikas began to fall very ill. It started out as diarrhoea and fever, but only worsened to the point that he had to be rushed to intensive care. There he spent days on end, only growing weaker and weaker by the day, and doctors were unable to pinpoint the cause. At first they suspected kidney damage, but when his little hands and feet started turning blue-ish black, they knew it was something else entirely, and far more dangerous.

“We were barely able to wrap our heads around what was happening, when our son was diagnosed with gangrene. In a matter of days, his fingers, his feet and most of his right leg had turned completely black. He couldn’t move them at all. He spent his first birthday lying in the ICU, and at the rate that it was spreading, we were terrified that he wouldn’t make it to his next birthday.” - Santhosh, father

His limbs were at risk of being amputated

Vikas was diagnosed with dry gangrene, which is an acute and fatal form of the disease. The 1-year-old’s skin was littered with dark spots, and bruising and discolouration resulting from clots in the blood vessels. In the worst case scenario, amputation is the only way to stop it from spreading to other parts of the body and there were high chances of Vikas losing his limbs to this condition. In addition, he was also grappling with severe infections and multi-organ dysfunction.

“When we heard that he may have to have his limbs amputated, I was horrified. Why did our child have to endure all this? How did it get so bad right in front of our eyes? What would happen to him if he lost his hands and legs because of this dreadful condition? My mind was flooded with all these thoughts. If something terrible happened to him, I wouldn't have been able to live with myself” - Roopa

These helpless parents would’ve lost their child, if it weren’t for you and your timely help

Santosh, worked tirelessly, all day and all night in order to earn enough money to meet the expenses of his son’s treatment. But as a chauffeur, earning a monthly income of merely INR 13,00, he was already neck-deep in debt after borrowing money from every source he could. Vikas needed surgery and prolonged ICU stay, but his father just couldn’t afford to continue his life-saving treatment any longer.

That is when you extended a helping hand to this family, and supported them in their time of need. Your timely contribution enabled Vikas to undergo proper treatment. He unfortunately had to have 6 fingers and 3 toes amputated in the process, but he recovered from the infection before it could spread to the rest of his body. Today, this child is enjoying his pain-free childhood, and sports a megawatt smile on his face. His parents feel blessed to have him back, and thank you endlessly for protecting their child from the worst.

Our son battled all odds and won against this deadly condition, and it was all because of you. Your support gave him the strength to keep fighting and he’s doing very well today. Our words will never be enough to express the gratitude we feel. Thank you for helping him when he needed it the most, and for keeping us in your prayers throughout this difficult time. You have given Vikas and us a second chance at life. We are ever grateful.” - Santhosh, father

Vikas’ parents were fortunate that their prayers were answered right in time, and that your help arrived before something bad could happen to their little angel. But the bitter truth is that many children born with rare disorders do not receive the same help. Millions of innocent kids suffer from cruel symptoms such as underdevelopment, weakness, localised pain, etc, due to which their life becomes a living nightmare.

If these little ones do not get treated within a specific period of time, the quality of life suffers, and eventually they face the risk of death. Funds stand between them and their healthy, bright futures. You can help avoid these complications, by donating to Milaap Kids’ Rare Disease Fund, which will ensure that no child suffering from rare diseases is left behind.
