Baluben is a strong, independent woman who has made a living and taken care of herself even under adverse conditions when her husband left her. She, presently lives alone in a quaint little house in Chandkheda where her 12-year old niece comes to visit occasionally.Baluben has been in the saree-selling business for almost 10 years now. After her husband left, she decided to take charge of her life and made changes in her lifestyle. With her first loan in Prayas, she set up a solar panel to overcome the fluctuating electricity in her district. After that, she applied for a second loan with Milaap in the hopes to expand her business.Now after meeting Baluben and seeing her colorful saree collection, I can confidently say that Baluben has achieved her goal. From selling 2-3 sarees each round, she has progressed to selling 12-15 sarees. She is also able to buy better quality sarees which she sells at Rs 40 per saree as opposed to Rs 25 per saree earlier. Baluben, further plans on visiting wholesale markets outside Chandekheda, like in Mathura for artificial jewellery, so she can expand her business beyond sarees, blouses and petticoats.Milaap has a new feature!
