“He would’ve died if he had stayed in my womb any longer. The emergency delivery saved him in that moment, but his life is still in danger. My husband has seen our baby only once in these 15 days because he’s trying to arrange for the money. Our baby needs a surgery soon to live.”
Ever since the birth of their baby boy 15 days ago, Divya and Dayanand have spent sleepless nights filled with worry and tears. The terrifying thought of losing their baby becomes more of a reality as they’re getting closer to the date of his surgery. Time is running out for their baby who’s been surviving on oxygen support in the NICU since birth. He has 6 days to get an open heart surgery, but Divya and Dayanand have no way to save him.
Their baby boy needed surgery 5 days after birth, but they couldn’t afford it
"I used to feel him kicking and think everything was okay with him, but during my fifth month of pregnancy, the doctor told us that our baby’s heartbeat was abnormal. During my eight month, they said I needed an emergency delivery because his life was in danger. It all happened so fast that we had no time to process. Before we knew it he was in the NICU with tubes running through him. I saw him for the first time only 5 days after his birth.”
Divya’s baby was not only born premature and underweight but also with a serious heart disease. He needed surgery 5 days after birth, but due to financial constraints, they were forced to postpone it. Now, he can’t go on any longer without surgery. The congenital heart disease that he suffers from is stopping the oxygen supply to the rest of his body and only an open-heart surgery can save him.
Now, he can’t go on any longer without a surgery – he’s running out of timeIt breaks Dayanand’s heart to stay away from the hospital, but the thought of losing him because of their poverty eats at him every day. He spends his days knocking on doors of friends and relatives asking them for help, but now even they can't do much.
“He spends the whole day trying to find any way to save our son. I can’t help but feel angry at ourselves for not being able to save him. I wish we weren’t this poor. He can't go any longer without a surgery. We have to find some way to make it happen, otherwise, we'll lose him forever."
