Ahamed Ashiq is a techie based out of Chennai and suffers from a chronic liver disease. His wife Zamira has since, left her job and dedicates all her time towards taking care of her husband.
This is Zamira's story about their struggle:
My husband and I had a love marriage many years ago. We continue to have a love marriage. Our happiness, however, was short-lived when Ahamed fell ill in 2016. It was the month of February and he was traveling on work. As soon as he returned, he came down with a fever.
We treated it as a normal fever until he started having bad thoughts and illusions - He started thinking that many people were against him and were trying to hurt him. We decided to admit him in a clinic nearby where they kept him for a day. The clinic concluded that he had a kidney failure and gave him very less chance for survival and directed us to get a secondary opinion and further treatment from a multi-specialty hospital.
Six years ago, back in 2010, Ahamed started suffering severe pains in the abdomen - He, however, took medicines to kill the pain and things were fine after. When I think back now, I believe that this problem has persisted for a while. Ahamed has had a fatty liver as a child - a disease that could lead to the inflammation of the liver.
Five years later, in 2015, he was down with Jaundice. On the night of Feb 29th,2016, we admitted Ahamed in Vijaya Hospital in Chennai. He was treated for hepatorenal failure - a life-threatening medical condition that consists of rapid deterioration in kidney function in individuals with cirrhosis. HRS is usually fatal unless a liver transplant is performed, although various treatments, such as dialysis, can prevent advancement of the condition. He was treated for a week in the ICU and then discharged.

Ahamed Is Diagnosed With Liver Cirrhosis
Cirrhosis is the severe scarring of the liver and poor liver function seen at the terminal stages of chronic liver disease. The scarring is most often caused by long-term exposure to toxins such as alcohol or viral infections. The liver is located in the upper right side of the abdomen below the ribs. It has many essential body functions. These include:
- producing bile, which helps your body absorb dietary fats, cholesterol, and vitamins A, D, E, and K
- storing sugar and vitamins for later use by the body
- purifying blood by removing toxins such as alcohol and bacteria from your system
- creating blood clotting proteins
Ahamed has undergone blood transfusions thrice through the course of 2016. There was no improvement. It felt like the sky had fallen above us. Our families have stood by us throughout, and have been with us at every step of the way.
