Vidya Vanam a unit of Bhuvana Foundation

    from Chennai, Tamil Nadu

Vidya Vanam, an education initiative of the Bhuvana Foundation, is a school for tribal and underprivileged children situated in Anaikatti, a village on the outskirts of Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu.
The school, which started in 2007 with 20 children, has grown to a strength of 300. The first batch of students has now reached Std. 10 and will take their board exam in 2017. The school is free for the children from the tribal community while others pay a very nominal sum. The school believes in giving children a fear-free environment, which is the only way to foster learning. The school gives equal status and importance to the culture, language and the way of life of the communities to which the children belong and incorporates their stories into the curriculum.
The school follows a bilingual teaching methodology up to class 4 and then continues with the English medium. The school follows  a theme-based interdisciplinary curriculum.
The school's biggest event is Project Day in December every year. This is based on a theme, which is connected to the various subjects, like Math, Science, Languages, Social Science. In 2014, our Chief Guest was well-known journalist P. Sainath as the theme was Rice.
This year the theme is Arts and the children explore how all subjects are connected to various forms of arts.  Our chief guest this year is Vidwan T.M. Krishna, the well-known Carnatic musician, researcher and 2016 Ramon Magsaysay Award winner.
