Provide free education to children of migrant labourers

Dahanu area is a tribal, rural area. Over 90% of the population is below-poverty-line migrant labour.  These people travel in search of work every 3 months, because of which their children never go to any school and do not get an education.  Consequently, most of these children begin working on the fields and in other places like brick making at the age of 12 or 13, and end up poor all their lives like their parents.

The objective is to provide free of cost education to children of migrant labour who otherwise do not get an education, in order to enable them to break away from the cycle of poverty described above.

The Bal Nandanvan Nisargshala was set up in 2006 as a free-of-cost, residential school. The school provides the following to its students:
  • Education (Government recognized SSC Board, Marathi language)
  • Food (3 meals a day)
  • Uniforms
  • Hygiene products
  • Boarding
  • Vocational education (basic computer knowledge, clothes making)
  • Medical assistance
  • Agricultural training
There are around 420 residential students with approx. 60% being girls and around 80 to 100 day scholars from near by villages .

The school has created an immense impact in the society over last 10 years:
1. Over 500 children, who would have been illiterate, are getting an education
2. Below-poverty-line children are getting nutritious food – there is a significant improvement in the children’s health
3. Reduction in child labour in the area
4. Children are brought up in a better environment – one where they don’t see daily consumption of alcohol, domestic violence, poverty and starvation
5. Provision of vocational training may (hopefully, one day) enable some children to break-away from the exploited life of working as migrant labour
6. Employment for local people – a teaching staff of 20 and 3 others
7. Revenues for local tradesmen from whom food, clothing, firewood, provisions, groceries, etc are purchased
 8. The first two batchs of 41 students cleared standard 10 in June 2014. Over 30 of them are now in local colleges furthering their education.

The operating cost for a year is over Rs. 49 lac. The break-up is as follows:

Dear Supporters,

We take pride in informing that Jagruti, a girl student from our Tribal School's first batch pass out, has been selected for nursing and is pursuing further studies with scholarships. She is an adivasi, a daughter of domestic maid without a father. She is the first generation learner.

She has demonstrated our long held belief that given an opportunity to grow, coupled with hard work and iron will, one can overcome any barrier. Being a student of first batch, she didn't have the best of the infrastructure to live in our residential school, had limited day light to study (since there is no electricity or solar power, when we started) but kept going on; purely based on the faith of her teachers who believed in her.

We are sure, she will inspire others too and this step will help her (and her family) to break out of the cycle of poverty. Kudos to Jagruti.

Dear Supporters,

Finally, our school got the FCRA permanent registration without paying a single penny for chai-paani.  Kudos to Mr. Gaikwad for his amazing efforts and undying spirit. Now, we can accept foreign funds as well.
