    This fundraiser will benefit

Students undergoing the Geriatric Aid training

from New Delhi, NCT of Delhi

 What
An independent employment generation – cum – healthcare assistance program that brings together underprivileged youth and the affluent care-seeking elderly population in a win-win relationship. The project seeks to train and youth in the BPL segment to enhance their employability and connect them to the care-seeking geriatric population in India and overseas.

Why
Many countries in the world, including India, are facing a growing demographic challenge whereby the elderly constitute a large ratio of the population. A tenth of India’s population were above 65 years of age in 2014 with the number growing to a staggering one-fifth by 2030. In actual terms 260 million Indians will be in the Senior Citizens category!
This would put a huge strain on Elderly Care, especially in the absence of an effective governmental support in the social security arena. Though government has invested large grants for youth employability and empowerment, the projects haven’t borne fruit due to (a) inadequate implementation and (b) poor monitoring of such schemes that often turn into checking the boxes and meeting targets. As in some other sectors, the quality of trained resources is below the global benchmark.

How
Trained Care Givers for the Elderly:  A trained Care Giver is a sub-nursing candidate who would have been trained and certified by the Health Sector Skills Council (HSSC) of India or similar comparable agencies. As per this, each Care Giver needs to successfully complete skills required for assisting a patient in activities of his/her daily living.

Candidates will be mobilized and oriented specifically on the employment prospect of Caregiving of elderly.  These candidates will be mobilized from economically weaker sections of the society.  After the candidate agrees to undertake an employment opportunity as a Geriatric Aid, His/her parental counseling is done inorder for the parent to know about the choice the candidate has made. The candidate is enrolled in the course only after fulfilling the checklist.

Course & Training
Christened as Geriatric Aid, the course aims to create a cadre of caregivers attending to elderly people. Lasting 90 days comprising 420 hours of training (including 156 hours of internship), the candidates are placed at hospitals for hands-on patient care under trained supervision. The theory modules cover all the above-mentioned skills needed to carry out their job smoothly.  The training also encompasses attitudinal and behavioral shift towards how to handle Geriatric population.  The candidates are also trained in a simulation lab where they are made to practice each procedure numerous times.
Post internship, the candidates are employed with a minimum wage of Rs. 10,000 as stipend for a 12 hour shift.  Candidates are from below poverty line families wherein their basic qualification is 10th or 12th pass and they are unemployed.
Career prospects
Once the candidate completes one year as a caregiver, S/he will be placed with leading home care companies which will give them  a chance to study further and become a specialized caregiver in different care options (dementia, Alzheimer’s, etc).  There is also an option of overseas posting for efficient candidates that potentially enhance their earning capacity.

Currently, this segment (Geriatric care) is being serviced by the unorganized sector plagued by lack of skills certification, process, lack of service orientation and customer orientation.

Ask
Support is required in taking care of the training cost as these students are from below poverty line and cannot afford training.  The per-candidate cost of training is Rs. 15,000/- for a 3 month course.  This cost includes – (a) Rent for venue and equipment, (b) faculty remuneration, (c) marketing expenses for mobilization of candidates, (d) internship cost, (e) independent third party assessment and certification of the candidates. The cost does not include any overheads.  It is purely training related costs.

You can also, nominate your own student and pay for her / his education.  GSPL takes only those students who are willing to take-up jobs as a caregiver after they are trained.  The candidates should be willing to work and make a career in health sector.

What do you get?
  • Each nominated or mobilized candidate will be taken through 3 months of rigorous training to prepare him for a career in caregiving.
  • Fortnightly report on the candidates’ progress.
  • Pictures and reports of guest faculty.
  • The joy of creating a difference in someone’s life by educating and then making him/her employable.
