I am fundraising to rebuild infrastructure in schools affected in the floods in Tamil Nadu

Why am I fundraising?

The recent floods in Tamil Nadu have impacted several schools and its students. Even before the floods, many Government schools lacked basic infrastructure but after, the situation has become more desperate. Many schools were inundated, furniture destroyed, electrical work in disarray, floor surfaces caved in and rendered uneven, walls defaced, toilets destroyed, kitchens put to disrepair and sources of clean drinking water also now unusable. Students who have returned have been given books, notebooks and other supplies but face immense hardship because of the unsafe and unhygenic environment in the schools. We hope to raise funds to get these schools functional and safe for the children again.

What do I plan to do with the funds?

We plan to rebuild toilets, repair kitchens and provide safe drinking water (including restoring Reverse Osmosis plants and installing water tanks).

10th July 2016
Greetings from TNFES!

It’s been a while since we last communicated with you. School Board exams in March and April and State elections in May kept us out of schools that we were working with. However, we went right back in June when the new academic year began.

A new urinal block for boys and a toilet block for teachers have been constructed at the Government High School at Karapakkam. Repair of existing toilets blocks for both boys and girls and plumbing for drinking water were completed on July 10.

Work is on for renovating a Chemistry Laboratory at the Arignar Anna Government Higher Secondary School at Poonamallee and is expected to be completed by July 16. This is funded by the Vetrivel Foundation of the US. Rejuvenate India Movement is our NGO partner handling the finances.
Meanwhile, at the Government Higher Secondary School at Thoraipakkam, new urinal and toilet blocks for boys, a septic tank and drinking water facility are being built while repair of an existing toilet block is also ongoing. These are expected to be completed by July 29.

All of this would not be possible without the continued support of our donors, NGO partners and various organizations. On July 07, an International Coffee-table book called 'Best of Chennai 2016' was released by the Governor of Tamil Nadu, Shri K Rosaiah. This book featured the work done by TNFES in helping schools after the devastating floods in 2015.

Such acknowledgements of our work only strengthens our resolve to continue supporting schools and students in need and to work with them in the long run. Once our work in the three aforementioned schools are completed, we intend to start afresh with assessment of more schools and undertake projects accordingly. We look forward to you extending your support and guidance in our next phase of operations as well.
