Why I am Fundraising

My name is Manjunath. My 16 month old baby, Thanmay, is suffering from a tumor in his liver and needs to undergo a liver transplant. He was undergoing chemotherapy for the past 6 months. I am the donor for mu son's transplant. We need over 18 lakhs for the treatment. I am a taxi driver and cannot arrange for this huge amount. With the help of my income and support from friends, I managed his treatment. But now we need your support to make this happen.

Our Story

We reside in Hebbagodi of Anekal Taluk. I am taxi driver, carrying on the work for another taxi owner. Mother is a housewife. When our son was 10 months old, doctors found out through scanning that he was suffering from liver cancer. We were advised by the doctors to get the baby treated in Bangalore. We came to BGS Global Hospital. Dr. Sonal Asthana and the team did CT scan, blood test and biopsy. We spent Rs. 40,000/ for all these investigations. Doctors told us that chemotherapy is very expensive in BGS Hospital and advised us to go to Bangalore Baptist Hospital, Hebbal.  Drs. Saro and Murali examined Thanmay. They did a procedure and inserted ‘Port’.  We spent Rs. 48,000/. Cost of three chemotherapy (5 days’ stay in the General Ward each time) was Rs. 66,000/. But with Dr. Saro’s help, we paid Rs. 44,000/. After three cycles, CT scan was done at a cost of Rs. 12,000/. After this, three more chemotherapy was done. Even here, we got a concession and spent Rs. 36,000/ as against the actual cost of Rs. 62,000/. After this, we had to get the PET scan done in HCG Hospital at a cost of Rs.23,000/.

After all this treatment, Dr. Sonal Asthana and team examined Thanmay and advised liver transplant. This is to be done in ASTER CMI Hospital in Cochin as the local hospital is yet to complete the required facility and procedures. Estimated cost is Rs. 18,00,000/; we have typed copy of the details of this cost, and we will request for soft copy and make available the same.  We will make available the soft copy of the appeal by the doctor. I, Thanmay’s father, will be the donor. Doctors have assessed me and have found me suitable.  Entire procedure of assessment is costing us Rs. 48,000/.
So far, total expenses have touched Rs. 2.5 lakhs. I have taken a loan of Rs. 1.5 lakhs to meet the same. With only one income earner as a driver in the family, we are not able to go further with liver transplant unless we get the required help. Transplant has to be done at the earliest as the chemotherapy got over some weeks back.

How You Can Help

We appeal to you for your financial support to save our son. We would be very grateful for your concern, help and prayers. We are requesting the hospital team to give the bank details for making your contribution, also 80G details.

"I am the President of Cancercare, a small NGO. As a volunteer, I attended a training programme in Bangalore Baptist Hospital conducted by Dr. Stanley Macaden and his team in Palliative Care Dept. I try to do whatever help I can give to the cancer patients. That is how I was in BBH when my cousin, diagnosed of lung cancer, was undergoing chemo. Thanmay was in the next bed going thro’ chemo. That is the origin. My cousin was following up this case and she informed about transplant. I contacted Mr. Manjunath, Thanmay’s father, collected PET can report and forwarded to Dr. Stanley Macaden for his advice. Dr. Stanley in turn contacted a specialist in Delhi, and based on this, he spoke to Dr. Rajeev. After getting Dr. Stanley’s feedback, I moved further. With my niece’s help, I got information about possibility in CMC, Vellore and the cost. CMC does not have facility for paediatric liver transplant; cost of liver transplant in adults ranges between Rs. 15 and 20 lakhs".

"I do work at BBH in an ad hoc basis as Voluntary visiting Consultant in HPB surgery for the past couple years. BBH has helped out on numerous occasions with our patients who can't really afford Corporate health care.
We decided to ask Dr Saro for help with Tanmay and she immediately agreed. That is how Tanmay ended up there. She, the Chemo Unit there and other volunteer donors have done a tremendous job and are the main reason we are now looking to treat Tanmay in a definitive manner. Dr Stanley Macaden was on the telephone a few days ago and we had discussed outcomes from Transplant for Hepatoblastoma.  Looks like we are on a roll now and should be able to get Tanmay back to full health", Thanmay's doctor.
