    Sushmita Dolai

    from Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu

This is the story of Baby “Sushmita Dolai”, age :4 years. She is the daughter of “Shubhankar Dolai,” and “Tumpa Dolai”. The Dolai family belongs to East Midnapore district, West Bengal , and have migrated to Coimbatore, Tamilnadu, in search of work. Shubhankar works as a waiter in a restaurant, while Tumpa is a housewife. Their total monthly income would be about Rs. 8000/= per month.

Sushmita  was born as a Thalassemic child, which means that her body is genetically incapable of producing fresh blood . The Bone Marrow, which is the inner centre of the bone, normally produces the needed quantity of blood. In this case, it is incapable of doing this critical function. This health disorder is called “Thalassemia”. This means, with her present condition, Sushmita will be dependant upon blood donors her entire life. Already, Sushmita has received blood 54 times from kind hearted blood donors.

We are the Akshit Foundation , a voluntary blood donors association, based in Coimbatore. Our association provides blood to thalassemic patients , as well as normal patients admitted in hospitals in Coimbatore and adjoining districts in Tamil nadu , and also some parts of Kerela state. We are one of the oldest blood donors association in western Tamilnadu.

Shubhankar approached us to arrange blood for his child , and also to get financial help from us to provide surgery to her. Since we function on a voluntary basis, our resources are very limited. That’s why we have approached “Milaap” to help this family.

We have helped Shubhankar , to get his daughter examined by doctors at “Apollo Hospital” , Chennai. Apollo have expressed willingness to perform a bone marrow transplant on Sushmita,  from a donor with a healthy bone marrow. This transplant is expected to cure Sushmita completely, and is expected to make her free from Thalassemia. The cost : Rs.9.4 Lakhs. Apollo has asked Shubhankar to admit Sushmita  at the hospital on 10th Oct, 2018.

We request all those who are reading this story, to donate towards Sushmita’s treatment, and to encourage their families, friends, neighbours, acquaintances to do the same.
