I am Nalini and I live in Jamui, Bihar. I completed my bachelors from Kumar Kalika Memorial College in Jamui after which I started working with an organisation called i-saksham in Jamui itself. My role is to engage with girls of grade 6-8 standard in Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya (residential girls secondary school), to focus on their personal transformation. I focus on helping the girls know more about themselves, about self-control, working in groups, make them aware about social issues through discussions and skits, and the way they can face the challenges of growing up in a society that discriminates on the basis of gender.
Dancing, has always been more of a dream than a passion for me. I came across the diploma in Dance Movement Theory offered by Tata Institute of Social Sciences and to my delight, got selected for it . This course is completely new and different for me and I had never heard about it, but when my friend Pragya told me about the course, it intrigued me and it was related to my work. I think with this course I can develop a give a new direction to my life and the way I work as I eagerly look forward to make the girls of Kasturba a part of it. Through this course I can work on enhancing self as well as others' capacity and knowing and expressing self better. From the perspective of kasturba girl's, I can help this to break their hesitation, to come forward and increase their awareness and agency. I think this is a very beautiful and relevant tool to engage with the girls leading to immense learning and long term transformational changes in them.
I want to take admission in the course, but the one year course requires a one-time fee of Rs. 42,000 . With this, and some more help to sustain in Mumbai for few weeks, I can also pay for my travel to mumbai and accommodation till I find a part-time job to fund myself for the coming year.
Going to TISS or to Mumbai to study still feels like an unattainable dream to me. Please help me achieve that dream and give direction to the lives of kasturba girls of Jamui and myself. I hope this will give courage to other girls from small towns to dream of studying in state-of-the-art courses and institutions and become a part of the tribe of educated aware and responsible youth.
