Story

The pandemic has been devastating for all, but more so for many women & children who have been victims of domestic violence and abuse during the lockdowns. Their homes are no longer safe spaces. This, coupled with large-scale unemployment, means poor mental & physical health for many young learners and their mothers. In addition, social relationships have also suffered, with each being isolated from the other in what used to be tight-knit communities.

As educators & social workers, the idea is to create a safe space for students and mothers who want to learn and work. Khoj Basti, our community centre started a few years ago by Teach For India fellows, had been one such space. Due to the pandemic, it was shut down, but it was revived last year by our team. We have successfully operated the space for 6 months now, and it has served as a venue for many amazing workshops such as gender inclusivity, poetry writing, art class, remedial classes, cyber security, group mental health counselling, career counselling and self-expression among others. Khoj Basti has also been used for an adult literacy programme which is helping mothers of our students learn to read & write basic Hindi and math. It has so far impacted close to 200 women & children from the communities of Prahladpur, Lal Kuan & Lakkarpur in the Tughlaqabad area.

Here is our impact report. It contains data relating to the impact we have had over an academic year on our students, and how Khoj Basti has been an important part of that.

The next phase would be to expand its access to more people and run literacy & skill development programmes for both adults & children.

For this, we require your support to pay the rent and utility bills for the space. The rent for our space is Rs. 8000 per month, and the utility bills including electricity, wifi and water come out to Rs 500-1000.

All contributions will help create a safe learning space for women & children!

Best,
Mrinalinee, Lakshita & Ridhi
