Most of us have seen waste pickers toting a large sack, scanning sidewalks and streets for discarded plastic bottles and other waste. Is it likely that you will buy them a chai and sit down to talk with the person? In 60 years of city life, a person would generate roughly 20,000 kilos of waste. If you never find an opportunity to thank a waste worker for taking care of your trash, here is that chance. Informal waste workers have restricted movement during the lockdown. We know that they earn a daily wage and don’t manage to save. During the last lockdown, we heard horrible stories of food running short and waste workers breaking curfew rules to pick waste, thus running the risk of police action, spreading and contacting the virus.
We are a small coalition of organisations that work to manage waste across 50+ locations in India. The extensive network of formal and informal Safai Saathis on ground handles the waste generated by us all. The success of our companies, built on millions of kilos of waste we have managed is owed to waste heroes. It would mean a lot to us to be able to give back to them. The Rs.10,00,000 we are hoping to raise from this campaign is a fraction of the support we want to provide Safai Saathis. We are reaching out to our clients and networks too.
