    Vishwanath Swami

    from Bengaluru, Karnataka

71-year-old Vishwanath Swami, a Frontline Corona-Warrior in Bengaluru, had been helping the underprivileged people survive amid the pandemic, when he fell victim to COVID-19 himself. He braved a tough battle for over a month, but it has left his life in tatters. Now, financially strapped, he is in need of help from generous people to pull through this difficult time.

As a young man, Vishwanath didn’t share the same world view as most people. The philosophy of Jiddu Krishnamurti had greatly inspired him to dedicate his life to social service. So, he set out to create his own legacy. For 50 years, he has worked for the betterment of society and the environment, earning him media recognition for his work.

In July 2021 Vishwanath tested positive for COVID-19, when had been working on the ground, serving the underprivileged who had been severely affected by the first and second wave. Eventually, his condition worsened and he had to be shifted to the ICU.

“I couldn’t just turn my back on these people, seeing how much they were struggling. Many people tried to stop me, saying I was risking my own life in the process. I knew the chances of getting sick were high, being in this line of work. But, I never thought I’d be left in such a critical state.” - Vishwanath

A month later, he was declared COVID-free. But his 37-day hospital stay had left him financially shattered.  After spending over INR 7 lakh, exhausting his life savings and borrowing from friends, Vishwanath now has nothing left.

“All my life I have only given, never received or taken from anyone. But my battle with COVID-19 has left me so weak, and at times I even gasp for breath. I am still recovering, and it will take me quite some time to get back on my feet. I fully intend to go back to doing what I had been doing the day before I tested positive, and that can only be possible when I am in good health. For this, I need your support.”

Vishwanath has been a strong shoulder to the society for nearly 5 decades. He now needs a shoulder to lean on during his hardships.
