Support Village Children To Develop Skills For A Brighter Future

WHAT DO WE DO?
Mountain Village Foundation (MVF) started last year (2018) with the aim of providing skills and opportunities to children in the hill villages of Uttarakhand so that they can overcome odds like low exposure to opportunities and reach their aspirations of self development and create a sustainable livelihood for themselves within their villages when they grow up.

MVF brings to the village children different resources for skill development and takes them through an entrepreneurial journey through a design thinking and game based approach. Our programme has instilled a new belief  in them that they can set up their own personal projects based on their passion, learn from different stakeholders and even collaborate to undertake real projects for social development within their villages. Over the year, we have been able to create a programme that helps children to learn English, computers, photography and videography. We also provide resource personnel to enable them to create new products. We also teach them the nuances of setting up a business project and equip them with skills and enable them to envision running their own small businesses in future.

Our motto work together, grow together has instilled in them a sense of community too. The children have been problem solving about how they can work together to use water more efficiently during times of scarcity. Another project they have started is to make compost pits to make compost from the wet waste in their homes. Along with this, children have been creatively recycling waste from their homes to create useful products like dustbins for their village. This process has helped them to understand the concept of social development through a socially conscious business.

MVF's Little Entrepreneurs program  has grown from 1 village to 3 villages. Our programme brings hope to the children that even with limited resources and a drive to change the status quo, they can create a new future for themselves where they have the ability to fulfill  their aspirations like those of any other children that have better opportunities.

WHY ARE WE DOING THIS?
Almost 45% of the youth in villages in Uttarakhand migrate to cities or other States in search of jobs. Most of them find it difficult to get a good job even after migrating as they do not have the requisite skills and so many end up doing odd jobs in the cities that pay very little. This happens because currently there is a lack of learning opportunities which limits their abilities to create a sustainable livelihood.

MVF believes that if skill development and entrepreneurial opportunities are provided at a young age, then children will be empowered to create a means of livelihood within their villages. There will be no need for them to migrate and leave their homes and families in search of jobs.

HOW WILL WE UTILIZE THE CONTRIBUTION?
We are currently working within 3 villages and want to support a total of 5 villages in the coming year so we can take these opportunities to more children.
We want to raise Rs,6,50,000 to support needs of 5 villages. The distribution of the amount is as follows:

Computer Training  - Rs.1,20,000
Skill Development (resources + trainer/facilitator) - Rs.1,50,000
Entrepreneurial Training and Support to children - Rs.2,40,000
Student Projects and resources- Rs.50,000
Space for conducting classes - Rs.90,000

This is just the start of our journey. We need your support to reach many more children who can hope for a better future.
Your support can help the village children to dream just like you and I do.

Thank you so much for your generous contribution to Mountain Village Foundation. Your contribution will help us to support the children with the right resources and bring to them more opportunities that will expand their horizons.  We are sharing with you a few updates from our work.

Children across our sites are currently working on their year-round project on "Waste Management." Our Program Facilitator (soft skills) is working with the children to make creative products from waste along with facilitating workshops that equip children with the right skills and attitude to solve a real waste related issue in their neighborhood through our project based learning approach.

Through our curriculum, we also aim to build 21st century skills like critical thinking, communication, collaboration , creativity and problem solving. Children have multiple opportunities at the end of each unit to showcase and share their learning in front of an audience.

These pictures are from a camp to introduce the above mentioned 21st century skills to children. Children created their own stories and characters and presented them through a self-managed puppet show.

Thank you so much for your kind support. With your help, we have been able to raise Rs.1,37,100. This will help us to fulfill some of our basic requirements. With your help, we have been able to get an indoor space where children come for their classes and take on board team members who are directly working with the children and on taking MVF's children's program forward.

These are a few pictures of some of the craft work the children have been doing.
