During the weekly visits to the hospital, 7 year old Kanha (who is the loveliest child you will ever meet) is afraid to sit alongside his father, fearing that his frail and scrawny father will get hurt if touched. Kanha also has a distinct somberness which is in great contrast to the childish innocence and naivety he has always possessed.

His father, Vaibhaw Vardhan (50), is barely a shadow of his former jovial self, having suffered through major surgery and successive rounds of chemotherapy to treat stomach cancer at a Private hospital in Chandigarh, over the past year.

What initially started as two successive bouts of typhoid, was diagnosed to be advanced cancer in August, last year. Since then, through all the travails of cancer treatment, Vaibhaw has persevered, with a smile on his face and hope in his heart - and has continued to be a pillar of strength for his family and loved ones. Even when we have lost hope, he hasn't, completely in line with his nature.

Hailing from Ghazipur in Uttar Pradesh, Vaibhaw moved to Delhi two decades ago. Since then, despite facing multiple challenges, he has supported multiple friends and relatives in lifting them from what were resource limited settings with restricted opportunities in eastern Uttar Pradesh, to relatively prosperous lives. In many cases, this meant that his house hosted a persistent combination of relatives and friends for long periods of time, and often it meant that Vaibhaw had to help them both emotionally and financially.

When the news of his illness broke last year, countless friends offered support, and since then his battle with cancer has been financed through a combination of personal financial reserves and help received from close friends and relatives, his battle with cancer. Till date, this has cost ₹30,00,000 collectively. More recently, the going has been tough and all the financial reserves have been exhausted, taking away years of planning and restraint. Vaibhaw now worries for the future of his children, Mayuri (18), and Kanha (7).

Last month, doctors declared the need for intensified chemotherapy at a frequency of two weeks, at once doubling the costs of treatment, which now stand at close to Rs. 3,00,000 per month. The next eight months are crucial for Vaibhaw.

I am writing to you with a special appeal - while we have done our best to fund the treatment expenses so far, we need your help. Our financial resources have been exhausted, and and we really need your support to get Vaibhaw back home.

Here is a brief estimate of the expenses for the next eight months:

  • Chemotherapy: Rs. 2,40,000 (at Rs. 15,000 each for 16 rounds - to be done at 15 days gap for eight months)
  • Hospital stay charges: Rs. 8,00,000 (at Rs. 25,000 for a a week's stay)
  • Medicines: Rs. 5,00,000 (chemotherapy is accompanied by a number of  medicines, and medicines are also required during non-chemo periods)
  • Other miscellaneous expenses: Rs. 5,00,000
Vaibhaw has been fighting hard for his life for the last  1 year, and we, his family and friends, want to support him in this fight. We want him back on his feet and home with us. Every drop counts, and our families and friends will always be grateful for your support. Please help bring the 50 year-old loving father to two wonderful children Kanha and Mayuri, doting son to aged mother, and the perfect husband to Ranjana back home.

With Gratitude,
