Girl Up Heron is a club under Girl Up, a campaign of the United Nations Foundation.

We raise awareness and funds for programs of the United Nations that help some of the world's hardest-to-reach adolescent girls and women. In the near past, we have raised our voices against societal stigmas and raised funds and conducted donation drives and financial literacy sessions–especially for the benefit of women and children–apart from organizing frequent beach-cleaning campaigns and supporting small businesses.

Now, we’re headed back to the field with Svasthya 2.0, where we’re raising funds once again to purchase biodegradable sanitary pads to distribute to women in need, along with personal hygiene products like masks and sanitisers.

The ongoing pandemic can put a pause to everyday life, but it cannot pause periods. While period poverty–the inability to secure menstrual hygiene necessities due to financial constraints–has existed for a long time, the Covid-induced lockdowns have heightened it. This has not only resulted in job losses but disruption in the access of sanitation facilities and closure of schools that supplied subsidized sanitary pads to schoolgirls under government schemes, leading in turn to increased stigma and anxiety even in urban residents who menstruate.

At the same time, pads produced by major brands are almost entirely made of plastic and microplastics, which are among the most common plastic wastes found in the ocean, and take up to 600 years to decompose.
During the first edition of Svasthya in 2020, we raised an amount close to ₹80,000, and a part of which helped us buy around 4000 packets of sanitary pads impacting hundreds of people across Delhi and Mumbai (images attached below); let’s magnify our impact this time!

Join us in our effort to secure the present and the future of menstruators and the planet by contributing whatever amount you can. If the total funds received exceed our requirements, rest assured they will be utilized in our similar upcoming endeavours.
