The story isn’t new… 2020 was challenging for each one of us, in different ways. We might have lost a dear friend, a relative or maybe our crisis was financial, with the loss of our job or of some clients. Whatever it was, it made you overcome several emotional and psychological challenges.
But have you ever thought about the ones that have always been in a very challenging position in regards to their mental health?
792 million people, 10,7 % of the world population are affected by some kind of mental illness.
Now, let us take a closer look at our INDIA's Mental Illness prevalence.
10% of India’s Population suffers or has suffered from a mental disease. This means that 13% of people in India have faced or are still facing some kind of mental illness.
Stigma, discrimination, abuse, violence, abandonment, and lack of educational opportunities are some of the conditions such people have to face throughout their whole lives.
These are some of the reasons that have motivated us to build a rehabilitation center, in Cumbum, in the state of Tamil Nadu, in the south of India. We will welcome in our unit people suffering from any kind of mental disease and that have been left on their own.
In Vazhai foundation we are going to provide the following:
- Appropriate facilities;
- Treatment and rehabilitation everyone, even the ones that aren’t able to pay their expenses, irrespective of their gender, religion and any other factors;
- Behavioral treatment, helping the patients in developing the emotional, social and intellectual skills in order to need the least amount of professional support and in a more harmonious way;
- Improve the quality of life for the care givers (example: supporting the family members to get welfare benefits from the government);
- Vocational Training and Occupational Therapy in order to utilize the optimal level of functioning. Day care services for the ones who have shown positive improvement in the condition of the respective disease in order to promote the level of productivity and quality of life;
- Providing Multi Disciplinary Team approach;

Work is considered therapeutic and essential for both the physiological survival and psychological well-being of people in contemporary societies. Recognizing the importance of work, vocational rehabilitation professionals such as rehabilitation counselors, have consistently advocated for work as a fundamental human right of people with disabilities. Thus, the primary goal of vocational rehabilitation is to assist individuals with disabilities gain or regain their independence through employment or some form of meaningful activity and reintegration into society. The ultimate goals are in preventing potential disability, returning workers with disabilities to gainful employment, introducing individuals with disabilities into the labor force and keeping workers with illness and disabilities employed. This is achieved by working collaboratively with the client to understand existing barriers and potentials in order to facilitate the client's effective use of personal and environmental resources. To provide recommendation to change the environments in accommodating the needs of the individual for career, personal, social and community adjustment following disability.
Vocational rehabilitation aims at helping individuals to obtain and to retain a job. A successful placement and vocational rehabilitation outcome indicate job satisfactoriness from the employer and satisfaction from the individual with a disability. Vocational rehabilitation is a multi-disciplinary approach that involves a team effort of professionals in different disciplines who contribute their expertise to improve the well-being of the persons with isability so that they can be physical, psychological, social and culturally ready and competent to seek a job and to maintain a job.
