Story

Dear all,

The story isn’t new… 2020 was challenging for each one of us, in different ways. We might have lost a dear friend, a relative or maybe our crisis was financial, with the loss of our job or of some clients. Whatever it was, it made you overcome several emotional and psychological challenges.

But have you ever thought about the ones that have always been in a very challenging position in regards to their mental health?
792 million people, 10,7 % of the world population are affected by some kind of mental illness.

Now, let us take a closer look at our INDIA's Mental Illness prevalence.
10% of India’s Population suffers or has suffered from a mental disease. This means that 13% of people in India have faced or are still facing some kind of mental illness.

Stigma, discrimination, abuse, violence, abandonment, and lack of educational opportunities are some of the conditions such people have to face throughout their whole lives.
These are some of the reasons that have motivated us to build a rehabilitation center, in Cumbum, in the state of Tamil Nadu, in the south of India. We will welcome in our unit people suffering from any kind of mental disease and that have been left on their own.
In Vazhai foundation we are going to provide the following:
  • Appropriate facilities;
  • Treatment and rehabilitation everyone, even the ones that aren’t able to pay their expenses, irrespective of their gender, religion and any other factors;
  • Behavioral treatment, helping the patients in developing the emotional, social and intellectual skills in order to need the least amount of professional support and in a more harmonious way;
  • Improve the quality of life for the care givers (example: supporting the family members to get welfare benefits from the government);
  • Vocational Training and Occupational Therapy in order to utilize the optimal level of functioning.  Day care services for the ones who have shown positive improvement in the condition of the respective disease in order to promote the level of productivity and quality of life;
  • Providing Multi Disciplinary Team approach;
On top of all this we will even provide talks/gatherings and other events to raise awareness about all the different kinds of mental illnesses. Did you know that even highly educated people in India consider that a distance from mentally ill patients should be kept in order not to get sick as well? IT IS URGENT TO EDUCATE EVERYONE ON THIS MATTER!
Join us on this campaign in order to raise awareness for mental health!
In the first three months our aim is to give shelter to 20 patients. Here is how you can contribute to turn this dream into action.
