Historically the 4 adivasi tribes in this region, The Paniyas, The Bettakurumas, The Mullakurumbas and The Kattunayakans, have been coexisting in peaceful and fulfilling manner in and around the forests in the Mudumalai Tiger Reserve. But almost 40 to 50 years back, they started losing access to these forests for a combination of factors, from encroaching tea estates to the non contextual enivronement policy. This lack of access created a situation for these tribes where they lost access to livelihoods and food, further now having to live in the outside world, they had little space to preserve their culture.
It is out this context that VBVT started the Vidyodaya School, where the school acted as a space for the children to learn in a manner which was contextual to the culture and values. But also gain exposure to the outside world. The school's focus is to equip the children with the skills and mindsets to negotiate their own space in the ever changing world.
At present, we have 102 children in our school, where we have trained and qualified Adivasi teachers to provide a safe and nurturing space.
Your support will go towards the running of the school, which includes nutrition for the children, books and stationary costs and other expenses.
