13 year old Nasima from a village in West Bengal was a school going girl when she was sold by her own relative in Bihar. After living for months in the brothel, Nasima escaped and went to a local police station in the hope that the police will help her get justice and help her reunite with her family. Far from the support, she was faced with sexual and mental harassment by the police, including the women constables.

She is not alone. The reported number with the National Crime Records Bureau shows only 15,379 trafficking cases, which accounts for less than 1% of the total cases, that estimates say are close to 4 million. While less than 1% of total human trafficking victims are reported, 64% of the reported cases are investigated and with only 1.4% of arrested traffickers are convicted.

Most people who are trafficked continue to live in forced enslaved conditions by their traffickers and are not rescued. Nasima is one of the few survivors who could escape and is now trying to rebuild her life. She is committed to empowering other survivors of sex trafficking by fighting for their right to work, rehabilitation and the right to have a sound legal support.
In this fight to justice, Nasima is not alone! She is joined by 2500 survivors who are fighting for justice and trying to change the system to end human trafficking.

Appeal:

From registering a police complaint and getting legal support to rehabilitation, the road to justice and a dignified life for a survivor of sex trafficking is strewn with deep-rooted social stigma and systemic harassment. To address this, a group of 2500 survivors have come together to form Indian Leadership Forum Against Trafficking (ILFAT), India’s first coalition of human trafficking survivor which aims to affect change at the systemic level.

HELP, an award winning developmental organisation is committed to ensuring that these 2500 survivors get the resources it needs to operationalise through this crowdfunding campaign. The amount generated through this campaign will not only help these 2500 women get justice and rebuild their lives, but will also help ensuring that there are no other women go through the same traumatic and inhumane experiences as them.

You can learn more about HELP at www.helpap.org

Your support can only help a survivor of human trafficking rebuild her life, but can also help build a society where no human is for sale!

How will the funds be utilised:

The funds that will be raised through the campaign will be utilised by members of ILFAT to access lawyers for getting justice, appeal to higher courts (which many a times they are unable to do due to lack of funds), and to make sure that they receive adequate compensation as per law. The availability of these resources will also help empower them to become leaders and in ensuring that they get assimilated in the society where they can share their experiences, observations and recommendations as leaders rather than mere victims of human trafficking crimes.

About ILFAT:

Indian Leadership Forum Against Trafficking (ILFAT) is a national platform by the survivors and for the survivors of human trafficking. They have come together from different parts of the country to achieve a shared vision of having a nation free from all forms of human trafficking. ILFAT is committed to rebuilding the lives of their members and want to be considered stakeholders in the decision-making process. For long, these decisions have been made without consulting them and understanding their life experiences.

With a mission to change that, the members wish to play a participatory role in policy formulation, since these laws and policies are about them and they cannot and should not be without them - both their voices and participation. The forum’s aim is to raise awareness around the issue of human trafficking and highlight the various challenges around it.
