People of Sundarban affected due to super cyclone Amphan

    from Kolkata, West Bengal

As you are well aware of the super cyclone Amphun which was originated in Bay of Bengal and made landfall at Sagardwip, South 24 Parganas, West Bengal. The southern part of West Bengal was devastated by this calamity, especially the Sundarban and its adjacent areas covering most of South and North 24 Parganas. Everything, I mean literally everything, was either blown away or just crumbled down by the extreme wind gusts of this cyclone, be it trees, posts, houses or river banks. Sundarban is utterly devastated first by super cyclone, then by the salt water influx from the broken river banks. Cultivation land, trees, ponds, every fresh water ecosystem is severely damaged by the salt water intrusion. I can write on and on about the catastrophe occurred there; however, my words will not be enough to portray the actual suffering being faced by the inhabitants of Sundrban.

Immediately after the area was accessible for relief work; our organization rushed there to distribute essential and necessary items such as medicine, clothes, sanitary napkins, tarpaulin etc. Tarpaulin was considered in the necessary items as most of the houses were damaged and people were sleeping under cloudy sky. Due to limited financial capability and resources, we made a list of names for distributing the relief. But after the encounter with a 70 year old lady, who came to us crying for a tarpaulin as she had lost everything, even her utensils, we had to revise the list including her and dropping another person. Such is the state of matters there. With this, we have the onset of Monsoon, Covid19 issues and salinization of every inch of cultivation land.

The Light House organization is working tirelessly in coordination with the villagers as well as with the local authorities. We are working on priority basis. So first we distributed tarpaulin, clothes, sanitary napkin and medicine. Next to we tried ease the safe drinking water scarcity issue by desalinization of the available hand pumps. We are planning to take projects on desalinization of cultivation lands, repairing damaged river banks and distribution of seeds. We also have plans to plant mangrove saplings with help from forest department.

Most of the habitants of Sundarban are marginalized as they have lost most of their belongings, livelihood and their savings in this two-way attack of Covid19 pandemic and devastating super cyclone Amphun.

So, we are pleading for help from you. A little help goes long way and any help is of great significance. We are trying to rebuild the life of Sundarban in a sustainable manner. Help us in any way you may, please.
