My name is Sumit Anand, and I identify as a cis-gender gay man. I am organizing this fundraiser to collect funds for my Master's Program. I recently received a long-awaited acceptance letter from the University of Pennsylvania for a Master's in International Educational Development; and Hertie School of Governance for a Master's in Public Policy. Unfortunately, I am struggling with paying the tuition fees for the aforementioned program. I’m hoping this fundraiser will help me raise money for my higher education.
About me:
I am a Teach For India 2018 Fellow (Pune), and I have been working with children from disadvantaged communities for the past five years. My journey in tutoring started when I was in grade 8th, and I taught students from underprivileged communities alongside my mother, who also taught in low-income schools. In 2015, I worked with sex workers and their children in Delhi. My time there made me realize how policies do not account for the underprivileged communities, and education, therefore, becomes an essential means for them to grow and support their families. From that day forward, I joined Teach for India, where I worked with a low-income school focusing on expression and identity along with education.
Motivation and Purpose:
My Master's research primarily focuses on building the capacity of teachers to help, support, and promote inclusivity of students on the spectrum and vocational training of students so that they can become industry-ready, equipped with on-ground practical knowledge. Students at an early age face difficulties with their identity and thus find themselves pushed out by the current, on the fringes. They grow up to be reserved and underconfident, unable to make sense of their existence with respect to the broken rigid molds that they’re asked to fit in. Our schools are ill-equipped with supporting the kids on the spectrum. My research focuses on training teachers to be present in the early years of students' journey who identify themselves on the spectrum and helping them in skill-building and coming to terms with their identity, our society, and helping them find their own place in the whole scenario.
The Appeal.
My parents are over 60 and retired. My father is in the process of repaying our home loan, owing to which he will not be able to aid me or become a co-signer. We do not have any investment in the form of a property to put forward as collateral. Therefore, I need your support urgently and immediately, and hence I am writing to raise this fundraiser to ask for your help to support my vision. The tuition fee for the program is $75,000. I have received a scholarship of $5000, and still, there remains a need to pay $70,000 which roughly equates to 53,28,000 INR. I intend to work part-time and use the savings towards my living and food expenses.
UPenn has been my dream college to pursue my Master's. It will enable me to forge ahead in my education career and support NGOs working on skill-building. It will also allow me to lend my efforts to further LGBTQIA+ rights. Thus, I am here to seek your support and spread the word. Any amount of donation is highly, highly appreciated.
