While they already lead a life fighting social hostility, the impact of lockdown due to Covid-19 has left them fighting for bare survival. With no proper documentation and ID cards, accessing government relief measures and food distribution schemes has become almost impossible for trans people.
With this campaign, we aim to provide a month or half's financial support to around 1500 trans people covering the states of Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Telangana.
In Tamil Nadu, with the prolonged lockdown, many transwomen involved in traditional folk dance have been left unemployed. Around 250 such women are in dire need of money to bear through these tough times. A group of 200 people in Chikkaballapur consisting of transgender people, disable and HIV+ people need financial assistance to make their ends meet. Similarly 1000 trans people in Telangana need financial support for their basic sustainance.
Meet the Benificiaries
All of you who donate will be provided a one-week private access to our documentary 'Boxed' once the campaign ends. We have shared the trailer of the film above. For more info about the film, you can check out our Instagram and Twitter(links below).Other details regarding the access will be updated soon. We got in touch with these collectives last year when we made this film. It was because of the support of THITS (Telangana Hijra Intersex Transgender Samiti) and many other groups it that we were able to reach out to so many trans people who we interviewed in our film. Many people who you will be supporting through this campaign are part of this film. A small percentage (about 10%) of your contribution will go towards covering the pending production costs that went in the making of this film. This film then also becomes a good oppurtunity for you to get a better idea of the community which has mostly been misrepresented and made fun of in the mainstream.
The importance of donation
This campaign wishes to serve as a medium for you to exercise your social responsibility. While no amount of money is enough to make up for the crisis the trans community is under, here is how even the smallest contributions can help.
A donation of 1000 can help in providing direct 1000 cash transfer to a transgender person, the sources of livelihood of many include sex work and begging which makes them especially vulnerable at a time where there are major restrictions on movement across the country.
A donation of 1000 can help provide urgently required rations to a folk dancer. Folk dancers continue centuries old art forms and are especially vulnerable when the entire tourism and hospitality industry has collapsed on itself.
A donation of 1000 can help provide life saving HIV medicine to an HIV positive person. HIV positive people are already immuno compromised and are especially vulnerable in times of a pandemic.
Rs 1000 is at best a fancy dinner for many of us, but to those of us severely impacted by this pandemic, it can literally be the difference between life and death. We implore you to exercise empathy and donate as much amount as you possibly can. A little help can go a long way in troubled times.
SO SPREAD THE WORD AND DONATE
