Sumathi used to live with her mother in Coimbatore and was on the lookout for a job to support her children’s education. A divorcee and single mother of two children, Sumathi had gone to Kuwait to work as a househelp to support her family.
The situation took a turn when she was tortured and made to work for 20 hours a day. She was even tortured physically and was beaten up in many occasions.
She had requested many times to let her quit the job and just return back to her country. Her pleads were denied and she was blackmailed that all her travel expenses were taken care by them and she can only leave until all her dues are cleared.
And one grave day, they went to the extent to lock her in a dark room without providing her any food for almost an entire day. And in her attempt to escape somehow, she took the choice of jumping down a three storey building.
Sumathi was admitted to Mubarak-Al Kabeer Hospital where she was treated for one month as she had fractured her leg and hip. A few hospital staff shared Sumathi’s story on social media and her parents informed the National Domestic Workers Movement about the incident and the association arranged for medical rehabilitation and support for Sumathi.
She was helped by the Indian Embassy to get back to India, and the Ministry of Rehabilitation arranged for ambulance service from Chennai to Coimbatore and are offering further medical assistance.
She will be on bed rest for at least the next 6 months, currently she is doing her daily activities with the support of her mother. She has two children, one studying in 9th standard and other in 5th.
The fundraiser is intended to help Sumathi support her family of two children and her mother who were solely dependent on Sumathi for their livelihood. The funds raised in the campaign will be used for the education of Sumathi's children, daily needs, etc.
Please support Sumathi in her endeavors, for the same cause which she went through all this trauma for. She is currently unable to provide for her family, please do stand with her and her family through this.
