    Suman Banerjee

    from Kolkata, West Bengal

My name is Soumik Guha Roy and I am here to raise funds for my friend Suman Banerjee (a brother) for his treatment of Colon Cancer which got diagnosed on November 2020. Suman is just 33 years old and got married 3 years back. He has a cute, one year old baby daughter! A medical representative by profession, Suman is the bread winner of the family.

Suman went for a doctor  check up with certain complications of constipation and bleeding rectum in November 2020. His initial Colonoscopy report findings prescribed by  Dr. Subrata Pal  of (Kothari Hospital - Kolkata)   revealed annular growth along with luminal narrowing at rectosigmoid region with multiple small tissues embedded.  Biopsy revealed Moderate differentiated Adanecarcinoma which in simple terms means cancer!!!

Suman did not want his family to know about his dreadful disease. His parents are aged and have their health issues.  He is already in a midst of a financial crunch as he has pending bank  loans on his house. He was always optimistic from the first day that he could win over this disease.  “My family should know about my disease only after I get 100% cured”, he say's.

We opted to consult Dr. Ashok Malhotra (13-11-2021) for a second opinion as we could not accept the initial findings. He suggested for an immediate surgery on the basis of tests and reports. Surgery was planned on 16-11-2021 in B.N.R hospital,    but due to some personal reasons the doctor aborted the surgery on a notice period of just 12 Hrs and we were feeling helpless.

Without wasting time we got him discharged from B.N.R hospital , and took him to Narayana Hridulaya Hospital (Howrah, Andul) for immediate consultation and advanced Cancer treatment. Dr. Sumit Sanyal  and Dr. Sourav Chowdhuri checked all his existing medical reports related to his disease  and  prescribed few tests ( CT CHEST, IMMUNOLOGY, MRI PELVIS and others ) immediately. MRI report revealed long segment large bulky growth extending from mid rectum to rectosigmoid, along with multiple mesorectal nodes.  On the basis of the tests and reports and Suman’s age , the panel of doctors including Dr. Suman Mullik (radio onco) designed his line of treatment with immediate effect. It was decided to go for Total Neoadjuvant Therapy following a response assessment and finally robotic surgery for more accurate results.

Suman was admitted to the hospital (Narayana Hridulaya- Howrah) on 27-12-2020 for his diversion colostomy surgery which went successful. He got discharged on 01-01-2021. The OT happened under the supervision of Dr. Sumit Sanyal and Sourav Chowdhury.

Noadjuvent  chemoradiotherapy (NACTRT) began 04-01-2021 onwards. His radiation continued up to 08-02-2021 a duration of 36 days! Suman’s body tolerated the whole process quite well. It was initially scheduled to for a 2 weeks break between the NACTRT and Cape-Ox.

Suman was scheduled with his first Cycle of Chemotherapy on 06-03-2021. It was planned to give 6 Cycles of Chemotherapy  - CapeOx. After completion of the first 3 Cycles, few tests (MRI PELVIS, CT LIVER CECT) was prescribed. It was found that post chemo moderately differentiating mucin was sectreting Adenocarcinoma at mid and upper rectum. The CT Scan revealed Heterogeneously enhancing wall thickening seen involving the whole length of rectum. Few perirectal nodules were also found. Tiny cysts were also seen in bilateral kidneys. Post NACTRT MRI revealed bulky growth extending from rectosigmoid to 6 cm from anal verge. Further 3 chemos were advised.

Already over burdened with existing loans, the expenses of his treatment was going high day by day. Thanks to his office HR for his quick response in co-ordinating with the TPA to get his insured funds sanctioned early. But the funds were soon getting exhausted and till the time the 6th cycle of chemo (02-07-2021) was over, Suman was facing tough financial challenges to meet up the hospital cost.

Post chemotherapy the panel doctors opined for definitive robotic surgery  and colostomy closure to be done by Doctor Sumit Sanyal, Sourav Chowdhury , Doctor Rohit and Somasekhar (who came from Bangalore Manipal Hopital). The necessary  tests were advised to be conducted. CECT THORAX, CECT ABDOMEN, CECT CHEST, XRAY, 2D ECHO and ECO study screening was done before the tentative OT date scheduled on 22-08-2021. Preoperative diagnosis revealed Metastatic Carcinoma at rectum. As an operation procedure staging Laproscopy was done under general anaesthetic. But the operation was aborted on the basis of certain laproscopy findings.

The Findings stated, diffuse omental, parietal peritoneal, serosal, liver surface and undersurface metastatis. Presence of Ascites found.   For further investigations Biopsy was taken from Parietal Wall Nodule and it was  decided by the doctors  to go for immunotherapy and depending on the outcome  and further developments of the patient cytoreductive surgery (CRS) with hyperthermic intraoperative intraperitoneal chemotherapy    would be conducted  for his long  life.

In the mean time we came in contact with Dr. Aditi Bhat of Zydus Hospitals ( Ahmedabad) who is an expert for the same treatment. Sumans medical history was sent to doctor Bhatt. Going through the medical reports, Dr. Bhat decided to go for CRS and HIPEC with immediate effect. She ensured that Suman has probabilities to live a normal life post operation.

Suman is now admitted to Zydus Hospitals and he needs immediate financial assistance for his treatment costs . Till now the medical expenses has gone over 14 lakhs and  the family  is under huge financial distress.  He need immediate financial help from all you good people.

I pray to   all you good citizens to come forward to help Suman Banerjee who has to ‘LIVE’ , for his wife who just got married 3 years back, for the daughter who has just started walking holding  his fathers fingers and most importantly  for those old parents who is waiting for their son to come back home!

My heartfelt gratitude for all of you for coming forward with your generous contributions to save my friend, and keeping him in your prayers for his speedy recovery. Any contributions will be of immense help.
Thank you
