    Stuti Kapadia

    from Mumbai, Maharashtra

Hello everyone!
Thank you for giving this a read. My name is Stuti Kapadia and I have currently received an offer of admission for Addictions and Mental Health course in Canada. I am writing this as a request for consideration of an appeal for financial aid.

I am starting this campaign to raise INR 11, 00,000 (CAD 17,094) which is the Tuition Fee for the course. The rest of the living expense is INR 6, 50000 (CAD 10,200) which I will be supporting on my own.
The cost breakdown and structure is as attached in the offer of admission above. Please have a look.

Personal and Professional Background
I have grown-up in Mumbai and belong to a middle-income family. Throughout my academic career, I have been dedicated and have persevered tirelessly towards my goals. However, my father’s sudden demise in May 2015, led to enormous changes such as financial constraints, sudden responsibilities and the ongoing grief which seemed unending. Amidst this time of figuring out what my next steps should be, educating myself seemed as the right tool to move ahead. Although this time was challenging, I graduated with a BSc degree in Clinical Psychology, with Distinction and an MSc in Mental Health Studies with Merit. I have been fortunate enough to be able to gain the above honour, due to the understanding and support of my family and some savings.

For the last 2.5 years, I have been working with a Mental Health Organization in Mumbai. I have been closely working on integral and fundamental level with individuals living with Mental Illnesses and their families to cater to their needs. As a counsellor, I have been conducting face to face and digital counselling sessions with clients and caregivers. One of the most important and rewarding experience has been being committed to working towards inclusion of people living with mental illness into the society. Majority of the clients and caregivers I work with, belong to marginalised population and live their lives on the fringes. To address this in my capacity, I have worked on education on mental illness, stigma, mistrust, and discrimination and awareness programs by sensitising the family and society so as to accept the individual without prejudice and intolerance leading to inclusion. This experience gave me a perspective and approach of service delivery not just in the realm of illness but also by addressing factors that are outside individual’s control but a part of his environment such as family and society. Along with clinical work, I have also been intensively involved in Research associated in the field of Mental Health. I have spearheaded various published research papers such as ‘Adapting AVATAR Therapy: Using available Digital Technology for Auditory Verbal Hallucinations in Low and Middle-Income Countries’; ‘Mental Health Policies in Queer Community: Are we Doing Enough?’ and ‘Effectiveness of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for Substance-Use Disorders and the difficulties in treating this client group’.

I am very proud and grateful for all the work I have been able to do so far, however, the field of mental health and working in non-profits has also made financing an education abroad very challenging. The avidity to pursue this course abroad, is because I lack advanced and intricate skills required to conduct robust research with scientific rigour and the capacity to formulate impactful interventions at the community and policy level so as to serve the required populations, which I aspire to learn from the program. Being equally oriented towards research and clinical practice, the scope to conduct translational research with accomplished professionals, is a significant opportunity for me. I am confident that attending this programme will allow me to develop professionally as well as contribute to the society in the best possible way.

Where will the rest of the money come from?
I will be funding the living expenses for the duration of one year from personal savings/support from my family. For the rest of the amount, I have been constantly struggling with bank loans however, I have not been able to avail a loan being the sole breadwinner of the family as the loan process requires a co-borrower as well, which currently does not serve as an option for me. Your support in this fundraising campaign will allow me to cover the tuition fees for the entire duration of the program.

Please donate if you are able to. No matter the amount- your contribution will mean the world to me!

Please share this with your networks if you can. If you know of trusts/individuals/societies who would be able to help me with financial aid or scholarship, please help me connect to them.

A HUGE Thank You in advance!
