I am Mukesh - Teach For India Fellow now an Alumni, I have been working in the Ganesh Nagar community, Mumbai for the last 4 years and taught 85 students in 7th to 10th grade and have identified lack of access to quality higher education as one of the most prominent obstacles in our efforts to ensure educational equity for our students.
This gap has only been widened by the ongoing Pandemic.
Education is fundamental to an equitable society but the education crisis runs wide and deep. From an underfunded and broken public schooling system to a money-draining coaching centre model. In the Ganesh Nagar community, 3 out of 4 students don’t go to college. This, in effect, means that out of the total children in the age group of 18-23 in the community, around 25% attend college and university. Most of those who do get a shot at higher education, still are not able to access the quality of learning that would give them a fighting chance in the competitive job market.
It takes multiple years of intervention for different NGOs to be able to provide excellent education to students until Grade 10 in under-resourced communities. Of those many kids aspire to attend the best institutes in India. However, it is only possible for them either through continuous scholarship or sponsored admission to a coaching institute, as obtaining a seat in such programs requires access to specialized test preparation which is highly expensive and thus financially inaccessible for almost all our students. Without the test preparation support and guidance, it is unlikely that students from our communities will be successful in getting past the gates of the hallowed institutions of our country.
To bridge this learning gap, I along with members from the community and students have come together to address this situation.
•We together have taken an initiative to open a Learning Center where students from Grade 8 to 11 will have access to quality coaching/tutoring to supplement their high school education and competitive test preparation at a very low cost/for free.
•We will be providing the students with the best resources preparing them for Scholarships, Olympiads and other such exams, both online and offline. (Once the situation is stable)
We envision seeing children from our community attending the best Colleges and Universities in India.
This opportunity is for all those academically-inclined students who want to pursue a career in Science and Commerce streams.
